Belgium booked their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after defeating Senegal 3-2 following extra time on July 1 at Lumen Field in Seattle, United States.
Senegal took the lead through Habib Diarra before Romelu Lukaku equalized for Belgium. Ismaïla Sarr restored Senegal's advantage, but Youri Tielemans leveled the match once again to force extra time.
With the game seemingly headed for a penalty shootout, Belgium were awarded a penalty deep into stoppage time of extra time. Tielemans converted from the spot in the 120+5th minute to seal a dramatic victory. The match was officiated by Honduran referee Saíd Martínez.
Belgium advanced to the Round of 16 after finishing first in Group G, while Senegal qualified as the third-placed team from Group I. Belgium will face the winner of the match between the United States and Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 16.
