Thomas Tuchel has commended the contribution of England’s substitutes following their hard-fought 2-1 win against DR Congo in the Round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup.

England came from behind after conceding an early goal to secure the win, setting up a last-16 clash with co-hosts Mexico.

Harry Kane netted both goals for the Three Lions, with each assist provided by Anthony Gordon.

Gordon, who came off the bench, delivered the cross that allowed Kane to head in the equaliser. Prior to that, England had been left frustrated despite creating several chances, with DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi Nzau making a number of key saves.

Later, Gordon’s clever pass set up Kane again for the decisive goal in the 86th minute. Tuchel credited the positive attitude and unity within the entire squad for England’s progress so far in the tournament.

“As I’ve said throughout the tournament, the energy and team spirit are at the highest level. Everyone understands exactly which stage of the competition we’re in right now,” Tuchel stated.

“The players who aren’t starting continue to push the team forward, staying upbeat even during the water breaks. Everyone feels confident when they are on the pitch and equally supportive when they finish their game.”

“We wanted to make it easy by scoring first, but coming back from a goal down gives you real belief. The players know perfectly well what they achieved today and how much effort it required.”
