Manchester United were widely expected to enter the summer transfer window in search of a new left-winger.
Speculation had been strong that Marcus Rashford would complete a permanent move away from Old Trafford, with Barcelona reportedly his most likely destination following his impressive spell there.
His potential exit was set to leave United without a natural option on the left flank, forcing the 20-time English champions to reinforce that area of Michael Carrick’s squad.
However, as the weeks have passed, the situation has become less clear. Reports now suggest that Rashford could, in fact, remain at the club — a development that has caught many by surprise.
Even more unexpectedly, a report from Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport, relayed by Sempre Milan, has revealed United’s response to an opportunity to sign Rafael Leao, the Portuguese winger often described as “magical” by Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
According to the report, intermediaries had approached several clubs — including those in London and Manchester — to explore the possibility of finding Leao a new “luxury home.” Yet, the response from these clubs was a firm and polite “no, thanks.” Arsenal, who reportedly held a video call with the player’s representatives as recently as late May, were among the first to decline the offer.
This rejection will no doubt be disappointing for Leao, who was said to be eager for a new challenge away from AC Milan.
Despite publicly expressing interest in joining either Manchester United or Arsenal, both clubs appear unconvinced, likely due to concerns over Leao’s recent dip in form and questions about his attitude.
On his day, Leao remains one of the most electrifying wingers in Europe, and with a reported price tag of just £43 million, many expected him to be a tempting option. Nevertheless, neither English club seems ready to take that gamble.
A standout performance at the upcoming World Cup could have reignited interest in him, but at present, the 25-year-old is not a central figure in Roberto Martinez’s plans for Portugal.
The same Italian report suggests that Turkish giants Galatasaray may now step in to negotiate with AC Milan for the player’s signature.
As for Manchester United, much depends on the outcome of Rashford’s situation. Once that is resolved, the club are likely to re-evaluate their priorities on the left wing — with Crysencio Summerville believed to be their top target if they do move for a new wide man.
