Belgium will face Senegal in the Round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup, a clash that promises to be one of the tournament’s most unpredictable encounters.

The upcoming Belgium vs Senegal fixture is expected to be an engaging contest, with both teams evenly balanced and showing similar levels of inconsistency in recent matches.

Belgium started their group campaign with two draws against Egypt and Iran, while Senegal endured back-to-back defeats against France and Norway.

To secure qualification, both sides bounced back impressively. The Red Devils crushed New Zealand 5-1, while Senegal recorded an emphatic 5-0 victory over Iraq, sealing their places in the Round of 32.

Both teams demonstrated in their final group-stage matches that when they find their rhythm, they can pose a genuine threat in North America.

However, both Belgium and Senegal have struggled under pressure in the World Cup’s knockout stages, with disappointing records in previous editions to back that trend.

Pape Thiaw’s side have been formidable in recent years, having beaten Morocco earlier this year in the Africa Cup of Nations final on the field.

Senegal have arguably been the most dominant footballing nation in Africa for almost a decade now.

They reached the AFCON final in 2019, won the title in 2022, lost to eventual winners Ivory Coast in 2023, and were controversially denied another triumph against Morocco this year after the result was overturned off the pitch.

Belgium, on the other hand, continue to carry the tag of World Cup underachievers. Despite previously holding the FIFA No. 1 ranking, they have repeatedly failed to make a deep run in the tournament.

Senegal, too, have had their share of disappointments, most notably being thrashed 3-0 by England in the Round of 16 of the 2022 World Cup.

Even so, Belgium looked off the pace in their opening draw against Egypt, while Senegal showed determination against a strong France side that appears destined for the final stages of the 2026 competition.

Having faced tougher opponents en route to this stage, Pape Thiaw’s men may benefit from their challenging path and experience.

Belgium do not possess the same cutting edge as France or Norway, and Senegal’s survival in the so-called ‘Group of Death’ deserves recognition.

By contrast, Belgium’s uninspiring draws with Egypt and Iran raise concern about their ability to perform when it matters. This tie could tilt in favour of Senegal.

Prediction: Belgium 1-2 Senegal
