The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has officially commenced the registration process for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for Postgraduate (NEET PG) 2026, one of India’s most competitive medical entrance examinations. Scheduled to be conducted on August 30, the examination will determine admissions to postgraduate medical courses across the country, including MD, MS, PG Diploma and several other postgraduate medical programmes offered by government, private and deemed medical institutions.

The online application window opened at 5:00 PM on July 1 and will remain available until July 21, giving eligible medical graduates nearly three weeks to complete the registration process. Alongside announcing the examination schedule, NBEMS has introduced significant procedural changes that will affect every candidate appearing for the examination this year. Among the most notable reforms is the complete removal of the long-followed first-come, first-served system for examination city allocation, a decision aimed at making the process more transparent and equitable for lakhs of aspirants.

The revised guidelines mark one of the biggest changes to the NEET PG application process in recent years. By replacing the race to secure preferred examination cities with a structured preference-based allocation system, the Board intends to reduce unnecessary pressure on candidates during registration while ensuring a more balanced distribution of examination centres across the country.

Candidates can now submit their applications through the official NBEMS portal by completing the online registration process, uploading the required documents and paying the prescribed examination fee within the stipulated deadline. The examination will continue to be conducted in a computer-based format at designated centres across India. Following the completion of registrations, NBEMS will issue city intimation slips before releasing admit cards. The examination results are expected to be declared by September 30, enabling the counselling process for postgraduate medical admissions to commence thereafter.

Every year, NEET PG serves as the gateway for thousands of MBBS graduates seeking admission to postgraduate medical education. The examination plays a crucial role in determining the future careers of aspiring specialists in disciplines ranging from General Medicine and Surgery to Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, Radiology, Anaesthesiology and numerous other medical branches. Given the immense competition for limited postgraduate seats, every procedural change introduced by NBEMS is closely monitored by candidates preparing for the examination.

This year, the Board has sought to simplify the registration process while simultaneously strengthening verification procedures and administrative planning. The advisory issued by NBEMS makes it clear that candidates should not panic or rush to complete the application immediately after the portal opens, as early submission will no longer provide any advantage in securing a preferred examination city.

Under the previous system, examination cities were allotted largely on a first-come, first-served basis. As a result, lakhs of candidates would attempt to register immediately after the application portal became active, often leading to heavy website traffic, technical slowdowns and anxiety among applicants fearing that delays could force them to travel to distant cities for the examination.

Recognising these concerns, NBEMS has completely overhauled the city allocation mechanism. Candidates will now be required to indicate three preferred examination states instead of selecting examination cities on the basis of application timing. The Board has clarified that this new approach is intended to eliminate unnecessary competition during registration while allowing authorities greater flexibility in planning examination logistics.

According to the revised guidelines, the first preferred state must correspond with the correspondence address provided by the candidate in the application form. The remaining two preferences must be neighbouring states. This structured preference system has been designed to optimise centre allocation while reducing the possibility of candidates being assigned examination venues far from their place of residence.

NBEMS has assured applicants that every effort will be made to allot examination centres according to the preferences submitted during registration. However, the Board has also reserved the authority to assign candidates to any examination city or centre anywhere in India if required due to administrative constraints, security considerations, technical requirements or logistical challenges.

The revised allocation framework reflects the increasing complexity involved in conducting one of the country’s largest computer-based medical entrance examinations. Managing examination infrastructure for thousands of candidates simultaneously requires careful balancing of seating capacity, technical resources, security arrangements and geographical accessibility.

NBEMS Introduces Stricter Verification Rules and Aadhaar-Based Authentication

Along with changes to examination city allocation, NBEMS has introduced several important verification requirements that candidates must carefully follow while completing their applications. One of the key changes relates to the mandatory submission of a valid correspondence address supported by documentary evidence.

The Board has specifically instructed candidates to ensure that the correspondence address entered in the application form is accurate and supported by acceptable proof of residence. Unlike previous years, the correspondence address cannot be modified after the application has been submitted, even during the correction window that is usually provided for rectifying certain errors.

This means candidates must verify every address-related detail before final submission, as any mistake may affect examination centre allocation and official communication throughout the admission process.

To support address verification, NBEMS has specified several acceptable documents. Government-issued identity documents carrying the candidate’s address, including Aadhaar Card, Passport, Voter Identity Card and Driving Licence, will be accepted. In addition, documents such as recent bank statements, electricity or utility bills, rent agreements, employer-issued residential certificates, hostel accommodation letters and certain medical registration records may also be used wherever applicable.

The emphasis on address verification is expected to improve administrative accuracy while ensuring that candidates receive examination centres that correspond as closely as possible to their declared place of residence.

NBEMS has also expanded the use of Aadhaar-based authentication as part of its broader effort to strengthen identity verification and reduce the possibility of impersonation during the examination process. Digital verification mechanisms have increasingly become an important component of national-level entrance examinations as authorities seek to enhance transparency and examination security.

Candidates have been advised to keep all personal documents readily available before beginning the registration process to avoid delays arising from incomplete documentation or verification issues.

The Board has further informed candidates that a detailed Information Bulletin will be released separately, containing comprehensive instructions regarding eligibility criteria, application procedures, examination rules, documentation requirements, correction policies, and other important guidelines governing NEET PG 2026.

Medical graduates intending to appear for the examination have been strongly advised to study the Information Bulletin carefully before completing the application process. Since postgraduate medical admissions involve multiple stages, including eligibility verification, examination, result declaration, counselling and document verification, even minor mistakes during registration can create complications at later stages.

Candidates are therefore encouraged to verify all personal information, academic details, category certificates, correspondence address, uploaded documents and preferred examination states before submitting the final application.

The announcement of the examination schedule also provides clarity for lakhs of aspirants who have been preparing intensively over the past several months. With the examination now scheduled for August 30 and results expected before the end of September, candidates can organise their remaining preparation accordingly.

NEET PG continues to be one of the most demanding entrance examinations in the country due to the vast syllabus, intense competition and limited number of postgraduate medical seats available every year. Success in the examination requires not only strong conceptual understanding but also careful time management, strategic revision and familiarity with computer-based testing patterns.

The introduction of a more structured examination city allocation process is likely to reduce some of the anxiety traditionally associated with the registration phase, allowing candidates to focus more effectively on their academic preparation rather than technical concerns related to securing preferred examination centres.

As registrations remain open until July 21, eligible candidates are expected to complete the application process after carefully reviewing all instructions issued by NBEMS. With stricter verification protocols, revised examination centre allocation rules and enhanced administrative safeguards now in place, NEET PG 2026 represents another important step in the continuing modernisation of India’s postgraduate medical entrance examination system. For lakhs of aspiring doctors, the coming weeks will be crucial as they complete formalities and intensify their preparations for one of the most significant examinations of their medical careers.
