England’s promising young footballer Erica Parkinson has completed a move to two-time NWSL champions North Carolina Courage, marking the first major transfer of her career. The 18-year-old midfielder, who became the youngest player to receive a senior call-up under Sarina Wiegman earlier this year, will now continue her development in one of the most competitive women’s football leagues globally.

Born in Singapore to a Japanese mother and an English father, Parkinson was eligible to represent four nations at international level. After moving to Portugal at the age of 10, she eventually chose to play for England, although most of her early footballing journey unfolded abroad, away from the UK spotlight.

Her profile rose dramatically in March when Wiegman included the then-17-year-old in her senior squad ahead of World Cup qualifiers against Spain and Iceland. Since that moment, speculation about her next career move intensified, with strong links to a potential switch to the NWSL surfacing over recent months.

This week, those rumours were confirmed as North Carolina Courage officially unveiled Parkinson. The club, who boast two NWSL Championships, three Shields, and two NWSL Challenge Cups, announced that the teenager has signed a contract running through the 2029 season, with an option to extend for 2030. Parkinson will wear the No.19 shirt.

Speaking about her decision to join the Courage, Parkinson said: “From the first moment I spoke to the club, I could tell they were extremely organised and had a clear plan for me that matched what I want as a player. Their attacking style of football really appeals to me. From the matches I’ve seen, they play with excitement and intensity, and I feel I can contribute to that. I’ve also heard wonderful things about the team culture, which made the decision even easier.”

Ceri Bowley, the Courage’s Chief Soccer Officer, praised the young midfielder, saying: “Erica is one of the most exciting young midfield talents in world football. She combines superb technical ability with an exceptional mindset and an unrelenting desire to improve. What stood out during our recruitment process was not only her skill on the ball but her bravery in playing forward, her intelligence between the lines, and the intensity she brings to every phase of the game. Her maturity at such a young age is remarkable, and she consistently influences matches at both ends of the pitch.

“Our ambition is to build a team capable of competing for championships while developing the next generation of elite players, and Erica perfectly represents that vision. We believe our environment, coaching, and playing philosophy will offer her the ideal platform to grow. We’re delighted she’s chosen North Carolina Courage and can’t wait to see her impact both now and in the future.”

Parkinson’s football journey began in Portugal, where she moved when her older brother joined the Porto academy. She played for FC Foz, Leixoes, and Benfica before making her professional debut for Valadares Gaia in Portugal’s top flight, Liga BPI, at just 15 years old.

By the end of the following season, Parkinson had been named Best Young Player in the league’s annual awards. Her impressive form carried into the 2025–26 campaign, culminating in her first call-up to the Lionesses. She had already made rapid progress through England’s youth ranks, featuring in the Under-17 World Cup squad in 2024, beginning 2025 with the U19s, and ending the year with the U23s.

Even as one of the youngest in the U23 squad, Parkinson stood out for her ability to find space, her direct approach, and her effectiveness with the ball. Known for her vision, passing range, and goal-scoring prowess, she poses both a creative and attacking threat while also contributing defensively — qualities that North Carolina fans will welcome, especially given the team’s need for more creativity despite sitting in NWSL play-off positions after 11 games.

Her move also reflects a growing trend of young English players heading to the United States to pursue careers in the NWSL. Parkinson follows in the footsteps of former West Ham defender Anouk Denton and Manchester United academy graduate Keira Barry, who both joined Bay FC earlier this year. Arsenal’s rising star Laila Harbert has also been heavily linked with a move to San Diego Wave this summer.

At North Carolina Courage, Parkinson will reunite with England Under-20 international Lauryn Thompson, a teammate she knows well from the Young Lionesses setup. “We’ve talked about playing for the same club for years — probably three or four,” Parkinson shared. “We have great chemistry on the pitch — I’m a midfielder, she’s a winger — and we enjoy playing together. Off the pitch, too, we share great experiences. This move feels like a new chapter for us to create more memories, and I’m really excited about it.”
