Napoli have confirmed the appointment of Massimiliano Allegri as their new head coach, following his departure from AC Milan. The experienced Italian tactician replaces Antonio Conte, ushering in a new phase for key players such as Scott McTominay and Kevin De Bruyne.

The club has finalised a long-term contract with the 58-year-old manager, which runs until June 2029. Allegri takes over from Conte, who left the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in May after guiding Napoli to a Scudetto and a second-place finish the following season. The announcement was held back until Allegri had officially ended his contract with the Rossoneri.

Napoli issued an official statement through their digital platforms to welcome Allegri back to the club, underscoring his rise from modest beginnings to becoming one of the most respected figures in Italian football management.

The club’s statement read: “Napoli is delighted to announce Massimiliano Allegri as our new first-team head coach. Allegri has signed a contract with the club until 30 June 2029.

“After a long playing career – including a spell with Napoli in the 1997-98 season – Max Allegri began his managerial journey in 2003-04 with Aglianese. In 2007-08, he led Sassuolo to their first-ever promotion to Serie B and won the Serie C1 Super Cup that same year. Shortly after, he made his Serie A managerial debut with Cagliari, finishing ninth and earning the Panchina d’Oro award.

“In 2010, he joined Milan, leading the team to their 18th Scudetto and sixth Italian Super Cup. From 2014 to 2019, he managed Juventus, securing five consecutive league titles, four Coppa Italia trophies and two Italian Super Cups. During that period, he also guided the Bianconeri to two Champions League finals. After a two-year break, he returned to Juventus and won his fifth Coppa Italia in 2024. Last season, he was back at Milan, finishing fifth in Serie A.

“A warm welcome to our new head coach, Max Allegri!”

Allegri brings with him an impressive record, featuring six Serie A titles and five Coppa Italia trophies won during his time with AC Milan and Juventus. His most recent stint at Milan ended prematurely after a disappointing domestic campaign that saw the team finish fifth. His departure coincided with a major restructuring at the club, which included the exits of senior executives Igli Tare, Geoffrey Moncada, and Giorgio Furlani.

Allegri’s immediate challenge will be to stabilise Napoli’s defensive structure and integrate their prominent players in preparation for the upcoming pre-season. The renowned coach will need to revitalise the team’s tactical approach before the 2026-27 Serie A season begins on the weekend of August 22, when Napoli will face a tough away fixture against Genoa. This opening contest will serve as the first real test of Allegri’s leadership at the club.
