Germany are now in search of a new head coach after Julian Nagelsmann announced his resignation on Friday morning.
His departure comes in the aftermath of a disappointing World Cup campaign, which ended with a stunning penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay.
Several prominent names have emerged as potential replacements, including former Premier League title winners and legendary German figures.
Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is currently the leading favourite for the position, with betting odds of 2/5 on Oddschecker. Klopp has been away from club management since leaving Anfield in 2024.
Reports indicate that the German coach, who now serves as head of global football operations at Red Bull, would be open to returning to the dugout if it meant taking charge of the national team.
It has also been suggested in some quarters that Klopp’s contract with Red Bull includes a special clause allowing him to exit his current role specifically to become Germany’s manager.
While Klopp is seen as the frontrunner, his long-time Premier League rival Pep Guardiola is not far behind, with odds of 5/1 to take over the national team.
Guardiola has never managed at the international level but has previously hinted in interviews that he would like to experience coaching a national side one day.
After parting ways with Manchester City at the end of last season, Guardiola admitted that he lacked the energy to take on another demanding club project similar to his stints at Barcelona and Bayern Munich. However, he did not rule out returning to management, saying, “Maybe a national team, but that’s different.”
Other strong contenders, according to bookmakers, include Stuttgart boss Sebastian Hoeness at 6/1, former World Cup-winning coach Joachim Low at 8/1, and Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler, also at 8/1.
Further down the odds list are former Germany manager Jurgen Klinsmann at 25/1 and current USA head coach Mauricio Pochettino with the same odds.
Former England manager Gareth Southgate is considered an outsider at 33/1, along with Patrick Vieira.
