On the eve of the 250th Independence Day, President Donald Trump delivered a powerful address at Mount Rushmore, highlighting America's achievements and expressing concerns over what he termed a rising "communist threat" within the nation. Speaking just after 11 p.m. ET on Friday, Trump characterized the upcoming July 4 celebrations as a significant milestone for the United States.

Celebrating 250 Years of Freedom

"Tonight, we gather on the eve of one of the most extraordinary days in the history of the world. Tomorrow, we celebrate 250 years of glorious independence and majestic American freedom. Nothing like it," Trump proclaimed to the crowd at the memorial. This address marked the official launch of the America250 celebrations, commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The event included military honors, aerial displays, and a fireworks show at the iconic site featuring the faces of former presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt.

In line with themes previewed by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, Trump emphasized American strength and identity, declaring the U.S. as "the most powerful country on Earth" and the "most exceptional nation in human history." He attributed America's success not only to its foundational documents but also to the character of its citizens. "Liberty has prevailed here because of the culture and character of the people who declared it, defended it, and preserved it," he stated, urging Americans to uphold this character as a patriotic duty.

Trump also addressed immigration, asserting that while one does not need to be born in the U.S. to be American, newcomers must adopt the nation's values and achievements.

Warning Against Communism

The speech took a political turn as Trump warned of a perceived resurgence of communism in America, a term he has increasingly associated with several Democratic candidates ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. He labeled communism as "a mortal threat to American liberty," and an adversary of the Constitution and the ideals of July 4, 1776. Trump urged Republicans to advocate for the SAVE America Act and modifications to Senate rules, claiming these actions would bolster the party's electoral chances.

The Mount Rushmore event is part of year-long celebrations across the U.S. marking the nation's semiquincentennial, with significant events planned in cities like Washington, New York, and Philadelphia. However, some festivities have faced challenges due to a severe heatwave affecting many regions.

Trump is set to continue the celebrations with a major "Salute to America" address in Washington on Independence Day. He concluded his speech after approximately 30 minutes, stating, "Tomorrow, we reach a milestone like no other and celebrate with hearts and soaring spirits," emphasizing that this is not an end but the beginning of a golden age for America. He briefly mentioned Iran, saying, "They’re dying to settle. They want to settle so badly. We gave him a week off for a funeral because we’re nice."
