Paraguay’s clash with France in the World Cup Round of 16 could face a late kick-off delay as FIFA officials continue to monitor worsening weather conditions in Philadelphia. Heavy storms are forecast to impact the city just as the teams are set to begin play at Lincoln Financial Field.
FIFA issues warning of possible disruption before kick-off
France may once again experience a prolonged interruption during a World Cup match, as FIFA has confirmed a significant risk of adverse weather ahead of their meeting with Paraguay on Saturday. The update brings back memories of 22 June, when France’s fixture against Iraq was halted for over two hours due to violent thunderstorms sweeping through Philadelphia.
“We are keeping a close watch on the weather in Philadelphia for match number 089. At this point, there is a high probability of delays caused by weather conditions,” FIFA said in an official statement. The governing body added that it would continue monitoring the situation and share updates in the lead-up to kick-off.
Philadelphia heat and storm forecast
The local weather has become a major challenge for players, with the National Weather Service expecting temperatures between 36°C and 38°C. When humidity is considered, the apparent temperature could reach an intense 41°C. To add to the difficulty, meteorologists have projected a strong chance of rain and thunderstorms after 5pm, aligning precisely with the scheduled start of the match.
Strict safety measures in the United States require that games be paused or postponed if lightning is detected within 13 kilometres of the stadium. During such instances, players must retreat to their dressing rooms, and spectators are instructed to take shelter. Play can only resume after at least 30 minutes have passed since the last lightning strike.
Deschamps unfazed by extreme heat despite high temperatures
During his pre-match press briefing, Didier Deschamps downplayed concerns regarding the intense heat expected in Philadelphia. “The heat doesn’t influence how you attack or defend. We knew it would be hot and took necessary precautions with the protocols,” said the France head coach.
Deschamps also referred to his team’s preparation earlier in the summer: “When we began our camp at Clairefontaine in May, it was quite hot as well. Every team has had to adapt to these conditions. This will be our fifth match, and while the players’ bodies are being tested, I’m not overly focused on the heat.”
Mbappe recalls earlier storm-related disruption against Iraq
The possibility of another weather-induced break may remind France of their group-stage encounter with Iraq. Kylian Mbappe admitted that the extended delay during that game tested his mental focus before he went on to score twice in France’s 3-0 victory. “That night felt incredibly long. It was emotionally draining and I was quite nervous,” the France captain said at the time. “It’s tough because you must stay concentrated and present while waiting in the dressing room.”
Mbappe further shared how the team managed to maintain composure during the long interruption. “We spent nearly two hours in the locker room. Remaining sharp was really demanding. It required a lot of effort to stay engaged, but we did our best and ultimately achieved our objective,” he added.
