Manchester United have reportedly dealt a decisive blow to one player’s hopes of reviving his career at Old Trafford this season, according to a recent report.
Former manager Erik ten Hag’s move to sign Andre Onana as a replacement for David de Gea turned out to be a costly mistake, as the Cameroonian goalkeeper made several high-profile blunders during his first campaign.
Ruben Amorim, who replaced Ten Hag as United’s head coach, decided that enough was enough after the 30-year-old’s costly errors in the Carabao Cup. His performances in both the Premier League and European competitions had already raised serious concerns, prompting the club to seek an upgrade in goal.
United turned to Senne Lammens, who has since impressed, while Onana was sent out on loan to Turkish club Trabzonspor.
The former Inter Milan shot-stopper performed reasonably well in Turkey, and The Claret-Blues were eager to bring him back to Papara Park for another season.
Although INEOS preferred a permanent transfer, Onana’s high wages and United’s asking price limited the number of potential suitors.
Interestingly, Onana was determined to return to Manchester United for pre-season training in an attempt to convince current manager Michael Carrick that he deserved another chance to compete with Lammens for the No.1 spot.
However, the Manchester Evening News reported that INEOS made their stance clear to Onana’s representatives, confirming that such an opportunity would not be available, and instead approved another loan deal.
Under the terms of the agreement, Trabzonspor will cover most — but not all — of Onana’s salary, and even that is dependent on the Turkish side enjoying an outstanding season.
Additionally, the club has agreed to pay United a loan fee of £1.3 million, though the payment is linked to the activation of various performance-related bonuses.
According to the report: “Andre Onana won’t be returning to Carrington for pre-season after his loan move to Trabzonspor was finalised on Friday. The two clubs reached an agreement last week, but Onana only signed the paperwork on Thursday after attending a wedding in Burkina Faso.
“United are satisfied with the terms of the deal, which could see full wage coverage if Trabzonspor have an exceptional season. They are currently paying the majority of his wages, but the entire potential £1.3 million fee is tied to bonuses.
“Onana genuinely wanted to come back to Old Trafford this season. He was eager to rebuild his United career, but his camp was informed that it was not an option. There’s now a belief that his time at the club has effectively come to an end, and he did not hold any direct talks with Carrick or Wilcox this summer.”
The loan agreement does not include a buy option or an obligation to purchase. United had little choice but to accept these terms, given the lack of interest from other clubs.
The hope within Old Trafford is that a successful loan spell could attract new suitors and allow United to finally draw a line under what has been a disappointing chapter in the club’s recent history.
