According to the legend, in ancient times Kuber was a great devotee of Lord Shiva. He used to worship Lord Shiva every day by bringing rare and fragrant flowers from Manasarovar. The responsibility of bringing these flowers was on his servant Hemmali. One day Hemmali became so engrossed in spending time with his wife that he could not deliver the flowers in time for the worship of Lord Shiva. Due to this Kuber became very angry. He considered this a great negligence in the service of Lord Shiva and cursed Hemamali that he would be deprived of his beautiful body and would suffer from leprosy and would live a miserable life on earth.

Hemamali's life changed completely due to the effect of the curse. He kept wandering in the forests and suffering many sorrows. One day he met the great sage Markandeya. The sage listened to his sad story and advised him to observe the fast of Yogini Ekadashi of Ashadha Krishna Paksha with devotion and regularly. Hemmali observed Yogini Ekadashi fast with full devotion and worshiped Lord Vishnu. Due to the effect of the fast, his curse ended, his body became as healthy and beautiful as before and he regained his old respect and happiness. This is why Yogini Ekadashi is considered a symbol of freedom from sins and a new beginning in life.
