Due to today’s fast-paced life and deteriorating lifestyle, cases of migraine are increasing rapidly among the youth. Often people ignore it considering it to be a common headache or take painkillers without consulting the doctor. But do you know that migraine is not just a headache, but a neurological problem?
On this topic, Dr. Amlan Tapan Mohapatra, Associate Consultant – Neurology, Manipal Hospital, Bhubaneswar, explains in detail why migraine occurs, how it is different from normal headache and how it can be avoided.
Is bad lifestyle the cause of migraine in youth?
Children and teenagers are extremely sensitive physically and mentally. According to Dr. Amlan Tapan, many of our everyday bad habits cause migraine pain:
Sleep imbalance: Sleeping too little or too much.
Bad eating habits: Not eating food on time, lack of nutrition and excessive consumption of packaged or sugary foods.
Screen Time and Gadgets: Excessive use of mobile, laptop.
Addiction: Smoking and alcohol consumption.
Caffeine Game: Consuming excessive tea, coffee or energy drinks or suddenly stopping taking caffeine completely.
other reason: Dehydration (lack of water), lack of physical activity, mental stress (stress-anxiety) and exposure to very bright light or noise.
What is the difference between migraine and minor headache?
Often people are confused whether they have a normal headache or a migraine. According to Dr. Amlan Tapan Mahapatra, the symptoms of migraine are quite different from normal headache:
Stages: Migraine is not just a sudden pain, it goes through many stages – like prodrome (pre-pain signs), Aura (blurry or flashing lights before the eyes) and postdrome (Weakness after pain subsides).
Type of pain: In migraine, there is usually a sharp tightening or throbbing pain in one part of the head.
Duration: This pain can last from 4 hours to 72 hours (3 days).
Other symptoms: Its main symptoms are nausea along with pain, vomiting, irritation by bright light and sound and severe discomfort even when moving the head.
