Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the CG Semi Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility in Sanand, Gujaratdescribing it as a major milestone in India’s journey to becoming a global semiconductor hub and saying the Semicon India Programme is gathering rapid momentum “step by step, brick by brick and chip by chip.”
Addressing the gathering, Modi said the newly inaugurated facility would initially produce 20 crore semiconductor chips annuallywith plans to scale up production to 500 crore chips a yearequivalent to more than 1.5 crore chips every day.
“I have been told that 20 crore chips will be produced here annually. I am also told that the target is to reach 500 crore chips every year. I am fully confident that this goal will be achieved very soon,” the Prime Minister said.
Highlighting the government’s semiconductor push, Modi said, “The Semicon India Programme is gathering rapid momentum—step by step, brick by brick and chip by chip,” adding that the initiative is laying the foundation for a self-reliant and globally competitive semiconductor ecosystem.
The Prime Minister congratulated the CG Semi team, the Gujarat government and everyone associated with the project, calling the facility a significant addition to India’s expanding semiconductor value chain.
Recalling his tenure as Gujarat’s Chief Minister, Modi said he had envisioned setting up a semiconductor manufacturing facility in the state more than 20 years ago. He said around 350 to 400 acres of land had been identified near Gandhinagar and Prantijand discussions had been held with several companies, but the project failed to materialise at the time.
“Today, when I see this facility, I feel that my dream of 20–22 years has finally been realised,” Modi said. “Back then, hardly anyone in the country spoke about semiconductors, and when I did, many in the media mocked me. Although it could not happen then, seeing it become a reality today gives me immense satisfaction.”
Modi also highlighted India’s broader manufacturing progress, referring to the recent maiden flight of the C295 military transport aircraft manufactured in They’re gonesaying it reflected the country’s growing capabilities in advanced manufacturing and strategic technologies.
The CG Semi PARTS facility will undertake semiconductor assembly, packaging and testing—critical processes in the global chip supply chain. The project is part of the India Semiconductor Mission and the Semicon India Programmewhich aim to strengthen domestic semiconductor manufacturing, reduce import dependence and position India as a key player in the global electronics industry.
