After missing out on priority midfield targets such as Mateus Fernandes and Elliot Anderson, and with dream signing Aurelien Tchouameni appearing out of reach, Manchester United may now turn their attention to less prominent options. As a result, INEOS will need to lean heavily on their scouting network to identify and secure a midfielder capable of making a real impact at Old Trafford.
The Italian football market, a long-standing area of interest for United, remains central to their recruitment plans. With Brazilian midfielder Ederson already arriving from Atalanta, one or two more Serie A midfielders could potentially join him in Manchester this summer.
AS Roma’s Manu Kone has been mentioned as a possible target, while transfer speculation surrounding Juventus star Khephren Thuram continues to gather momentum.
Thuram, who was once described by analyst Ben Mattinson as a “young Paul Pogba”, is now the focus of fresh reports from Italian daily Tuttosport, which has shed light on the Frenchman’s situation in Turin.
According to the publication, Juventus are pushing hard to bring in free agent Franck Kessie. However, to accommodate the Ivorian midfielder, they will need to offload one player from their current midfield roster.
As Tuttosport explains: “Juventus themselves must also take financial constraints into account, and there’s a need to trim down the midfield both numerically and financially. It’s no coincidence that work is underway in Turin these days to complete the sale of Khephren Thuram. In fact, the Frenchman is no longer considered unsellable, and Juventus is working hard to find him a place in the Premier League, where United, Liverpool, and Nottingham Forest have expressed interest.”
Reports suggest that an offer in the region of £43 million would be enough to convince the Bianconeri to let Thuram leave.
A commanding presence in midfield, standing at 6’4″, Thuram is known for his powerful ball-carrying ability and defensive contribution. If United act decisively, he could prove to be a smart under‑the‑radar acquisition who strengthens their midfield options while providing the physical and technical balance the team has been missing.
Thuram’s ability to combine strength, composure, and technical skill allows him to shield possession, resist opposition pressure, and smoothly transition play from defence into attack. These attributes could provide Manchester United with the control and authority they have long sought in central areas. Additionally, his adaptability would give manager Michael Carrick greater tactical flexibility across different systems and match situations.
At a fee around £43 million, signing Thuram would still leave United with the financial room to pursue another midfield reinforcement, such as Johan Manzambi or Kone, without exceeding the £85 million they had initially planned to spend on a single player. This dual approach would make the club’s transfer strategy both cost-effective and well-balanced.
