Manchester United are reportedly evaluating a move to sign Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos, according to renowned journalist David Ornstein from The Athletic.
As the summer transfer window approaches, strengthening the midfield remains a top priority for United. The club’s hierarchy is keen to ensure that manager Michael Carrick has adequate squad depth in central areas, particularly as the team prepares for its return to the Champions League next season.
United had initially identified Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes as major midfield targets. However, both players have slipped through their grasp—Anderson is joining Manchester City in a British-record deal worth £116 million, while Fernandes has already completed his move to Tottenham Hotspur.
With those pursuits unsuccessful, United have broadened their search for alternatives. Recent reports from The Peoples Person indicated that the club were keeping tabs on Santos, and Ornstein has now confirmed this interest.
Ornstein revealed, “Manchester United are exploring a move for Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos.”
He further added, “Any potential deal is still in its early stages, and the clubs have not yet begun formal discussions. So far, multiple clubs have made inquiries through the 22-year-old’s representatives.”
According to Ornstein, Santos wishes to secure a regular starting role—something he currently finds difficult at Chelsea, particularly after Moises Caicedo extended his contract at Stamford Bridge until 2033.
While Ornstein did not disclose a specific valuation, he mentioned that Chelsea rate Santos highly and would expect a strong offer for his services.
United have been long-time admirers of the Brazilian midfielder, but their willingness to proceed with a formal bid will depend on Chelsea’s asking price. Should the London side consider United’s offer reasonable, they are unlikely to block the transfer.
During the 2025/26 campaign, Santos featured in 43 matches across all competitions, contributing three goals and four assists. The young midfielder is known for his versatility, capable of playing both as a defensive anchor (number six) and as a box-to-box option (number eight).
