Ivory Coast international Yan Diomande has shared the deep emotional pain caused by the tragic loss of his 15-year-old sister, Roxanne. The young forward opened up about his grief at a time when Premier League powerhouse Liverpool are reportedly close to finalising a staggering £100 million summer transfer for the talented winger.
Tragedy behind the rise
The highly rated RB Leipzig striker, currently representing Ivory Coast at the World Cup, has enjoyed a rapid ascent in European football, scoring 12 Bundesliga goals since his move from Leganes. Yet, behind his professional success lies immense sorrow, following the devastating death of his younger sister two years ago in Abidjan.
Recalling the heartbreaking moment in an emotional open letter published on The Players’ Tribune, Diomande wrote: “Someone kept calling me from home. I was frustrated and didn’t understand why the calls were so persistent. When I finally answered, there was no attempt to soften the blow. You know how it is back home—no emotions, just direct words.
‘Your sister is gone.’ ‘What?’ ‘She died.’ ‘What are you talking about?’ ‘Someone put something in her drink at a party, and she never woke up. She’s gone.’”
He continued: “You were 15. Just 15. I never got any answers. I don’t even know if I want to know why. Maybe it was jealousy. Maybe it’s just something that happens in our country. Maybe I could have protected you. I don’t know.”
A lasting emotional void
The Ivorian star described the lasting numbness that has followed his sister’s death during a deeply personal reflection. “I used to have emotions. Now, I don’t feel anything. It’s like I’m not even human. Since you died, I’m just blank,” Diomande admitted.
Despite the emotional weight, he remains fiercely determined to honour his sister’s memory through his performances on the field. He added: “All I can do is channel the pain into working harder, to achieve everything we dreamed about. I want you to know that I will make sure you live on. I will make sure the whole world knows your name. Everything I do on the football pitch is for you.”
Liverpool’s keen interest
Diomande’s outstanding displays have reportedly made him the top target for new Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola, who views the Ivorian as a potential long-term successor to Mohamed Salah. The Merseyside club are working intensively to fend off competition from Paris Saint-Germain for the blockbuster signing. His tactical maturity and dynamic physical attributes have significantly raised his market value after his exceptional season in Germany.
World Cup challenge ahead
As transfer speculation continues, Diomande must now focus on Ivory Coast’s crucial Group E clash against Germany in Toronto. The teenager, who earned the player-of-the-match award in their opening victory over Ecuador, faces a stern test against Bundesliga defenders such as Jonathan Tah and Joshua Kimmich. A win would virtually secure top spot for the African side heading into the knockout rounds.
