Erling Haaland delivered a memorable performance as Norway defeated Brazil 2-1 to reach the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals for the first time in the nation's history.

The Manchester City forward scored both goals in a famous victory, increasing his tournament total to seven and joining the race for the Golden Boot alongside Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé.

Norway had never won a World Cup knockout match before this tournament, making the result one of the country's greatest football achievements. After the final whistle, Haaland described the victory as an unforgettable moment for Norwegian football.

"This is a day we'll never forget," he said. "Everyone should enjoy this moment because it's something truly special. I hope this success inspires young players across Norway, just like I was inspired growing up."

Norway produced an impressive display, controlling much of the match and creating more dangerous chances than Brazil. Haaland said patience was key before the opportunities finally arrived.

"Every match is different," he explained. "We stayed patient, waited for our chances, and took them when they came. The second goal was incredible."

The celebrations continued long after the game, with Haaland joining teammates and supporters in the traditional Norwegian rowing celebration.

Head coach Ståle Solbakken also praised his team's achievement, saying the victory had united football fans throughout Norway.

"It feels like the whole country is celebrating with us," Solbakken said. "This is the greatest night in Norwegian football history. We are proud to be in the quarterfinals, and now we'll see how far we can go."

Norway's reward is a quarterfinal meeting with England after the Three Lions defeated Mexico in the Round of 16. Solbakken said his squad was prepared to face any opponent and is focused on continuing its remarkable World Cup campaign.
