Tottenham Hotspur have set a new transfer benchmark for the second time in less than a week, formally confirming the capture of Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United.

The blockbuster deal is valued at £100 million, with Spurs agreeing to pay £92.5 million upfront and an additional £7.5 million in performance-based bonuses.

This acquisition represents a major show of ambition from the North London club, eclipsing the £85 million fee spent just days earlier to bring in Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United.

Head coach Roberto De Zerbi reportedly played a decisive role in the move, having personally identified his fellow Italian as a cornerstone for his project at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium — something Tonali himself confirmed upon arrival.

“I’m very happy to be here,” the midfielder told the club’s official website.

“When I walked into the club today, it felt amazing. People said there were four or five clubs interested – but, for me, there was only one.”

At 26, Tonali arrives at Spurs in his prime, bringing a mix of tactical awareness, defensive strength, and progressive playmaking ability.

He was a central figure for Newcastle last season, featuring in 53 matches across all competitions. While Newcastle were hesitant to let their deep-lying playmaker leave, the financial offer proved too substantial to refuse.

For Tonali, reuniting with De Zerbi and leading a bold new project in London presented an irresistible opportunity for both his professional development and personal life.

Tonali joins a busy summer of arrivals that already includes Jan Paul van Hecke, Mateus Fernandes, Martin Dubravka, Marcos Senesi, and Andy Robertson — signalling Tottenham’s intent to leave last season’s difficulties firmly in the past.
