New Delhi: Italy enjoyed another memorable day at Wimbledon as Flavio Cobolli and Jasmine Paolini secured places in the quarter-finals with impressive victories in their respective fourth-round matches on Monday.

Cobolli continued his remarkable rise on the ATP Tour by defeating Australia’s Alex de Minaur 7-5, 7-6(4), 6-3 in a high-quality contest. On the women’s side, Paolini returned to Centre Court with a hard-fought 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Alexandra Eala to book her place in the last eight for the second time.

Their wins keep Italian hopes alive at the All England Club and underline the country’s growing strength in both men’s and women’s tennis.

Cobolli’s impressive run continues

Facing one of the toughest opponents left in the draw, Cobolli stayed calm throughout the two-hour, 34-minute battle despite De Minaur taking an early lead in both the second and third sets. The Italian repeatedly fought back with aggressive shot-making and excellent control from the baseline.

The victory makes Cobolli only the third Italian man, after Nicola Pietrangeli and Jannik Sinner to reach multiple Wimbledon quarter-finals. While reflecting on his progress this season, Cobolli said, “It wasn’t easy to find the right way to play really calm and just play tennis. In Acapulco I was really happy with my level. I found the way to hang on to that feeling.”

The 24-year-old has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign after winning the ATP title in Acapulco and reaching his first Grand Slam final at Roland Garros. He will now face either Grigor Dimitrov or Britain’s Arthur Fery for a place in the Wimbledon semi-finals.

Paolini sets up Kostyuk clash

Paolini also produced a strong performance on Centre Court, where she was playing for the first time since losing last year’s Wimbledon final. After overcoming Eala in three sets, she thanked Roger Federer, who was watching from the Royal Box.

“Stepping on this court is something special,” Paolini said. “I feel lucky to have this opportunity. I want to thank you as well, Roger, because you’re my idol.” The Italian relied on consistent serving and confident play at the net to get through a challenging contest. She won 94 per cent of her first-serve points in the deciding set and did not face a single break point.

Paolini’s reward is a quarter-final meeting with Marta Kostyuk, who defeated Ashlyn Krueger 6-4, 6-4 to reach the Wimbledon last eight for the first time.

With both Cobolli and Paolini still in contention, Italy has plenty to cheer as Wimbledon heads into the business end of the tournament.
