Tottenham Hotspur have broken their transfer record with the signing of Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United in a deal that could rise to £100 million ($133m). The Italy international becomes a marquee arrival at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium under Roberto De Zerbi, who played a pivotal role in persuading his fellow countryman to join the north London side.
Spurs’ record-breaking move for the Italian star
Reports suggest that Tottenham initially had an £80m ($107m) bid rejected by Newcastle before the two clubs agreed on a structured deal worth £92.5m upfront and an additional £7.5m in performance-based bonuses. Despite interest from several top European clubs, Tonali explained that a long conversation with De Zerbi convinced him that Tottenham was the right destination.
The pair share a connection through Brescia, the club where Tonali made his name and De Zerbi’s hometown. Reflecting on his decision, Tonali said: “I’m very happy to be here. People talked about four or five clubs, but there was only one. I spoke with the head coach for about two hours about the club, the fans, the stadium, and our football. It felt like magic — I instantly knew I had to sign for Tottenham. I’ve faced them a few times and always felt the incredible atmosphere their fans create. I can’t wait to begin the season.”
De Zerbi secures his top target
For De Zerbi, bringing in Tonali is not just a tactical enhancement but also a reunion with a player he has admired since his early days in Italy. The Spurs head coach believes the midfielder’s arrival will transform the team’s core.
Expressing his excitement, De Zerbi said: “Sandro is a special player and a fantastic signing for our club. I’ve followed him for a long time, as he came through the youth system at my hometown club, Brescia, and I’m thrilled to be working with him now. Given his abilities, there was significant interest in Sandro this summer. But he was very clear about wanting to join Tottenham, and I’m sure our fans will love what he brings to the team.”
A heartfelt farewell to Newcastle
Tonali departs St James’ Park as a fan favourite, having helped Newcastle end their 70-year wait for silverware by winning the Carabao Cup in 2025. His time in the North East was marked by highs and lows, including a 10-month ban for betting violations, but he built a deep bond with the supporters and manager Eddie Howe. In an emotional farewell message, the Italian expressed his gratitude to everyone who stood by him.
“Three years ago, I came to Newcastle not knowing what to expect. Now it’s time to say goodbye, and finding the right words isn’t easy,” Tonali wrote.
“I want to start by thanking the club — the people working behind the scenes at the training ground, everyone who welcomed me and made me feel at home from day one. Thank you to the staff and my teammates for believing in me and helping me improve. A special mention to the gaffer, Eddie, who’s been a guiding presence and always supported me throughout this journey.”
“But most importantly, I want to speak to the fans. When things were tough, you stood by me. Not once did I feel alone. I felt your support every time I stepped onto the pitch at St James’ Park. That’s something I will carry with me forever.”
“Together, we achieved something this city had waited decades for. That day at Wembley was unforgettable — a historic moment we shared. To the fans who never stopped believing and cheering, that trophy was for you.”
“Football brought me to Newcastle, but I leave with my wife and our son, born here. This city gave me more than football — it gave me a home, unforgettable memories, and people I’ll always be thankful for. Thank you for everything.”
European experience and technical brilliance
Tottenham’s leadership, headed by sporting director Johan Lange, views the £100m outlay as a crucial step towards competing at the top of the Premier League. Tonali, who has previously won the Serie A title with AC Milan and reached the latter stages of the Champions League, brings valuable experience at the highest level.
Highlighting why the club made him a priority signing, Lange said: “Sandro is among the finest midfielders in Europe, and we’re delighted to have him join us. His technical ability, coupled with his football intelligence and mentality, make him perfect for the demands of our club. Sandro’s experience in both domestic and European competitions will be vital, and I’m sure our supporters will love his energy and determination. We’re all eager to see him wear the famous Lilywhite shirt for the first time.”
