Borussia Dortmund are reportedly intensifying their attempts to block Manchester United’s pursuit of defender Waldemar Anton.
Although Manchester United’s primary focus this summer is on strengthening their midfield as they gear up for next season’s Champions League campaign and a possible Premier League title challenge, the club is also exploring ways to reinforce other areas of the squad should the right opportunities arise in the market.
The defence remains a key area of concern. Matthijs de Ligt is expected to miss the start of the new season as he continues to recover from a back injury. Meanwhile, both Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire have struggled with fitness issues, making them unreliable options over the course of a long campaign.
While young defenders Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven have shown promise, the duo still require the guidance of an experienced centre-back alongside them as they continue their development at the top level.
According to a report cited by The Peoples Person, United have identified Waldemar Anton as a potential target. The 29-year-old has been one of the standout performers in the Bundesliga in recent seasons, particularly since his move to Dortmund from VfB Stuttgart.
Anton’s calmness on the ball, positional awareness, and defensive intelligence have made him a model example of the modern central defender, capable of anchoring any backline with authority.
Reports had even suggested that United were preparing an opening offer for the German international, who made two appearances at the World Cup.
However, as per German outlet Kicker, Dortmund have no intention of letting Anton leave this summer.
Kicker further reports that the club plan to offer Anton an enhanced role at Signal Iduna Park, underscoring his growing importance and leadership within the team setup.
Anton is expected to serve as the third captain in the squad, behind Emre Can and Nico Schlotterbeck. With both of those players currently sidelined due to injuries, there is a strong possibility that Anton could lead the team out wearing the captain’s armband when the new season begins.
Dortmund’s determination to keep Anton is evident, as they are already preparing a new contract for him despite his existing deal running until 2028.
The proposed new agreement would include improved wages, a clear indication of the club’s faith in the player. Dortmund hope these gestures of commitment will convince Anton to pledge his long-term future to the club and turn down potential overtures from Manchester United.
