The Musical Journey of Vippin Aneja

Vippin Aneja, a gifted singer, often refers to ‘divine intervention’ in his life. Collaborating with the legendary AR Rahman is a testament to that belief. Currently, Vippin is enjoying the spotlight thanks to Rahman’s composition, 'Tere Paas Main,' featured in the acclaimed film by Imtiaz Ali, 'Main Vaapas Aaunga.'

As a true Punjabi, Vippin responds to challenging questions with his characteristic straightforwardness, even when they hit close to home. He admits feeling unsettled when he first saw the trailer and noticed his version of the song was missing. However, he is now pleased with the positive feedback his song has received, which is included in the album, if not the film itself. Despite the competitive landscape, especially with renowned singers like Mohit Chauhan involved, Vippin remains unfazed. He believes, “Each artist has their unique essence. I am a distinct instrument, and Mohit has his own talents. Focusing on negativity would hinder the purity and honesty of my singing.”

Vippin feels immense joy in working with the iconic trio of Imtiaz, Rahman, and lyricist Irshad Kamil. He affectionately refers to Rahman as ‘Rahman bhai’ and describes him as a magician who transforms voices with his unique touch.

Receiving praise from Rahman is incredibly meaningful for Vippin. After performing two versions of 'Tere Paas Main,' he was thrilled when Rahman invited him back to his studio in Chennai and complimented him with, ‘you have done a good job.’ This isn’t their first collaboration; Vippin has also participated in Rahman’s Unity of Light and Peace concerts and lent his voice to the Tamil and Telugu song 'Simtaangaran' for Thalapathy Vijay’s film 'Sarkar.' He fondly recalls how Rahman encouraged him to sing the Tamil track with a Punjabi flair.

Punjabi music is a staple in Vippin’s live performances, and he has a Punjabi single titled 'Akhiyaan.' He made his Bollywood debut with Rahul Mittra’s 'Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster.' Vippin explains, “Playback singing requires you to set aside your own identity, which is why Rafi sahib (Mohammed Rafi) could sing passionately for Shammi Kapoor and with deep emotion for Dilip Kumar. If a song is picturized on Irrfan Khan, I can’t sing it as Vippin.” His musical highlights also include the song 'Jaane Tere Shehar' from the film 'Jazbaa,' which starred Irrfan.

Recently, Vippin has ventured into devotional music, stating, “Whether it’s Bollywood tracks or bhajans, anything that resonates with my audience gives me goosebumps.” As a jury member on the talent show 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa,' he seeks out that rare voice that resonates with him.

With 27 years in the industry, Vippin feels he is still on his journey. He has experienced both triumphs and challenges, but currently, this ‘people’s person’ is filled with gratitude. In an industry that can be cutthroat, he remains focused on positivity. He quips, “Even if the page is black, I prefer to highlight the white dot and illuminate the whole with light instead of darkness.”

'Tere Paas Main' may open new opportunities for him, but for Vippin, the essence of music transcends fame or success; it is about a higher purpose. He believes his gift is to connect with listeners on a spiritual level — “If my voice can heal, bring comfort, and connect my audience to God.” Amen!

Concerts play a vital role in Vippin Aneja’s musical journey. His recent sold-out show, 'Raag Se Rang Tak,' at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre, was a testament to his popularity. When asked if he ever forgets his lyrics on stage, he chuckles, “Well, we turn the mic towards the audience.”
