France captain Kylian Mbappe has issued a strong rebuttal to Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla after she made offensive comments about him on social media. The Real Madrid forward faced the remarks soon after Les Bleus defeated Paraguay 1-0 in a heated last-16 fixture of the 2026 World Cup.
Mbappe denounces the politician’s comments
Following France’s narrow victory, Mbappe was targeted with discriminatory slurs by Senator Celeste Amarilla, who questioned his heritage and character in a series of posts on X. In response, the French skipper released a firm statement condemning her remarks and questioning her suitability for public office.
“You are a despicable woman and unworthy of your position,” Mbappe wrote on social media.
He added, “You do not represent Paraguay, a country that has displayed passion and pride throughout the competition. Because of your recklessness and blatant prejudice, the world has already forgotten the incredible journey your players achieved during this World Cup, focusing instead on an incompetent woman who gives her country its worst possible image.
“I will never allow people like her to spread their hatred and ignorance across the world.”
Remarks lead to international condemnation
The controversy began after Amarilla reacted to Paraguay’s exit from the World Cup, criticising Mbappe in a series of highly offensive posts. Following reports that Mbappe did not greet the Paraguayan goalkeeper after the match, she wrote insulting comments questioning his intelligence and background. She went further by describing the French star as “a colonised Cameroonian who pretends to be French, resentful, nouveau riche, arrogant, and ugly,” and even suggested she regretted that Paraguayan players had not physically confronted him during the match despite admitting she was not a football follower.
French Football Federation takes legal action
The French Football Federation (FFF) has announced that it will pursue legal proceedings against the senator, condemning her comments as “criminal and reprehensible.” In an official statement, the governing body confirmed that it has filed a report with the public prosecutor’s office to initiate judicial action.
The FFF stated: “The remarks made by Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla about Kylian Mbappé are utterly despicable and unacceptable. How can anyone make such statements? These words are criminal and reprehensible. They must be prosecuted here as elsewhere. The French Football Federation is submitting a report to the public prosecutor for the purpose of legal action.”
The statement continued, “The Federation offers its full support to its captain, its players, and to all victims of such hateful comments. The FFF remains dedicated to fighting discrimination in every form. Such remarks dishonour those who express them and those who share them. The players of the French national team represent France; it is our nation that is being disrespected.”
Governmental and institutional backing for the French team
In addition to the FFF’s response, Mbappe has received strong support from the French government. Sports minister Marina Ferrari and FFF president Philippe Diallo both condemned the senator’s outburst, calling it “reprehensible” and expressing solidarity with the national team captain.
As the legal process advances, the French squad remains united against discrimination and continues its preparations for the quarter-final clash with Morocco in the 2026 World Cup.
