The French Football Federation (FFF) has formally appealed to FIFA to have Michael Olise’s yellow card rescinded following France’s last-16 win over Paraguay, as concerns mount that the Bayern Munich star could face suspension later in the World Cup.
France are anxious about the possibility of losing their key playmaker for the crucial stages of the competition. Olise, who has been one of the standout performers of the 2026 World Cup, was shown a yellow card after a confrontation with Paraguay’s Matias Galarza during Saturday’s knockout encounter. While Galarza dropped to the ground claiming he was struck in the face, video replays appeared to show that Olise merely tugged at his opponent’s shirt.
The caution now leaves Olise just one booking away from an automatic one-match ban. If he receives another yellow card during Thursday’s quarter-final clash with Morocco in Foxborough, he would be suspended for a potential semi-final against either Spain or Portugal.
The FFF’s appeal comes in light of what French officials believe was an officiating mistake. As reported by The Athletic, the federation has reached out to FIFA in hopes of correcting the decision. This follows a recent disciplinary controversy involving USMNT striker Folarin Balogun, whose one-match suspension was overturned after his red card against Bosnia-Herzegovina. Following intervention from U.S. President Donald Trump and the U.S. Soccer legal team, FIFA invoked Article 27 of its disciplinary code to allow Balogun to feature against Belgium in the Round of 16.
French officials have been careful to distance their request from the American case, emphasising that their appeal strictly concerns the circumstances of Olise’s booking. They argue that the yellow card was unjustified and should be annulled on its own merits. Still, the timing of the move highlights how national associations have grown more confident in contesting refereeing decisions after FIFA’s leniency in the Balogun case.
Olise’s potential absence would be a major setback for France, given his remarkable influence throughout the tournament. The Bayern Munich winger currently leads the World Cup assist table with five – the highest tally by any player since 1994 – and is just one short of Pele’s record of six set in 1970. He has already earned the Man of the Match award twice: first in France’s 3-1 group-stage victory over Senegal, where he assisted Kylian Mbappe’s goal, and again in the 3-0 Round of 32 win over Sweden, where he recorded two assists.
His consistent brilliance has made him a frontrunner for the Golden Ball award. Former France legend Thierry Henry even described Olise’s performances as being on “another planet.” Losing such a creative force for a potential semi-final would be a significant setback for Didier Deschamps’ side, particularly given the strong attacking partnership between Olise and Mbappe that has defined France’s campaign.
With global attention now focused on FIFA’s handling of disciplinary matters, the governing body faces pressure to demonstrate consistency in its rulings. Whether France will receive the same consideration as the host nation remains uncertain. For now, Olise must tread carefully in the quarter-final against Morocco, knowing that one more yellow card could cost him a place in the semi-final.
