Tom Holland has shared a humorous behind-the-scenes story from the set of Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic The Odyssey, revealing that he mistakenly believed the director was unhappy with his performance during the early days of filming.

Speaking to People, Holland recalled that filming frequently stopped after only a few minutes. Unfamiliar with the technical limitations of IMAX film cameras, the actor assumed the interruptions meant Nolan wanted to move on because he was dissatisfied with what he had seen. The repeated pauses left Holland increasingly concerned about how his work was being received.

The misunderstanding was quickly cleared up by stunt coordinator George Cottle, who explained that the IMAX camera’s film magazine can record only about three minutes of footage before it must be replaced. “It’s just three minutes in the mag,” Cottle told the actor, reassuring him that the pauses were simply part of the filming process and had nothing to do with his performance.

Holland said the explanation immediately eased his concerns and gave him a greater appreciation for the unique workflow involved in shooting on IMAX film. The experience also highlighted the highly technical nature of Christopher Nolan’s filmmaking, which often relies on practical methods and large-format cameras.

The actor also recalled another memorable moment from production when a vivid rainbow appeared just as the cast and crew were preparing to film an important sequence. Holland described the rainbow as looking like “something out of My Little Pony,” adding that the unexpected sight briefly interrupted filming and became one of the lighter moments on set.

The Odyssey stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, while Tom Holland portrays Telemachus, the hero’s son. The cast also includes Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o and Charlize Theron.

Directed by Christopher Nolan, The Odyssey is scheduled to open in theaters on July 17, 2026.
