Lifestyle Desk – In today’s digital era, using smartphones till late night has become a daily habit of millions of people. While scrolling social media, watching reels or chatting for hours, we don’t even realize when it’s 1 or 2 in the night. However, this habit can have a negative impact not only on your sleep and eyes but also on the health of the skin. Spending time in front of the screen till late night and not getting enough sleep affects the natural repair process of the skin, due to which many skin problems start appearing prematurely.

What is the relation between blue light and skin?

The effect of blue light emitted from digital screens like smartphones, tablets and laptops on the skin is still a subject of research. However, prolonged and continuous exposure to screens as well as the habit of staying up late at night can increase oxidative stress on the skin. This can reduce the glow of the skin and problems like pigmentation are likely to increase with time. However, experts also point out that the sun’s UV rays cause more damage to the skin than the blue light of phones alone.

Lack of sleep can spoil skin health

The effect of not getting enough sleep at night is first visible on the face. When the body does not get good sleep for 7 to 8 hours, the skin is not able to repair itself properly. This can result in dark circles, puffiness, dull skin and facial fatigue. Due to less sleep for several days continuously, the moisture of the skin also starts decreasing.

Signs of aging may appear prematurely

Staying awake continuously till late night can increase the level of stress hormones in the body, which affects the formation of collagen. Collagen plays an important role in giving firmness and elasticity to the skin. Due to its deficiency, problems like fine lines, wrinkles and loose skin can appear prematurely.

The problem of acne may also increase

Lack of sleep and increased stress also affect hormonal balance. This causes excess oil to form in the skin, which can clog the pores. As a result, the problem of acne and pimples may increase. If there is already a problem of acne, then the habit of staying awake till late night can make it more serious.

How to protect?

  1. Use of mobile phones and other digital screens should be stopped at least 30 to 60 minutes before sleeping. Try to get good sleep of 7 to 8 hours at night.
  2. Clean your face thoroughly before sleeping and use moisturizer according to your skin.
  3. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen while going out during the day, because the UV rays of the sun cause the most damage to the skin.
  4. If working on the screen for long periods of time is your compulsion, then take breaks in between and adopt a healthy lifestyle.
