If you have purchased a reserved train ticket from the Railway Counter (PRS) and have accidentally left it at home, then there is no need to panic. Even in such a situation, Indian Railways may allow you to continue your journey, provided your ticket is officially verified.
If you feel during the journey that your counter ticket is left at home, then any of your family member or authorized person can submit the original ticket to the Station Master of your boarding station.
After checking the ticket, the station master will send an official message to the next stations of the train. On the basis of this, the railway officials present in the train will be able to confirm your ticket and as per the rules, you may be allowed to continue the journey.
This facility is only for those passengers who have purchased physical tickets from the Railway Reservation System (PRS) counter. If you have booked an e-ticket from the IRCTC website or mobile app, then this rule will not be applicable to you. E-tickets are checked digitally, so a separate system already exists for that.
If during the journey you come to know that your counter ticket is left at home, then immediately take these steps. First of all inform the TTE (Travelling Ticket Examiner) present in the train. Call a family member or authorized person at your home and ask him to deliver the original ticket to the station master.
After verifying the ticket, the station master will send information to the concerned railway authorities, so that your journey can continue as per the rules. This rule of Railways is a relief for those passengers who have purchased the ticket correctly but have forgotten to bring it with them by mistake.
