Manchester United are set for a welcome financial boost as Mason Greenwood edges closer to completing a transfer to Turkish club Fenerbahce.

The Old Trafford management is expected to benefit handsomely from a well-planned sell-on clause included in Greenwood’s previous transfer agreement, which will provide a significant addition to the Premier League side’s summer transfer budget.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Greenwood is on the verge of signing for Fenerbahce in a deal valued at around €45 million (£38.9 million).

The Turkish Super Lig giants have stepped up negotiations with Marseille and now appear to be leading the chase for the former Manchester United forward, despite keen interest from several European sides, including Tottenham Hotspur and AS Roma.

Jacobs further reports that Greenwood has already agreed to personal terms and is expected to sign a lucrative four-year contract in Istanbul.

If the transfer proceeds as anticipated, Manchester United are expected to receive approximately €5 million (£4.3 million) from the deal.

When United sold Greenwood to Marseille in 2025 for £26.5 million, they included a sell-on clause entitling them to nearly 50% of any profit from a future sale.

Given that Fenerbahce’s proposed €45 million fee represents a substantial increase over Marseille’s original purchase price, United will receive a significant portion of the profit generated by this transfer.

This unexpected windfall will provide added financial flexibility to Manchester United’s summer transfer budget, as manager Michael Carrick continues to restructure his squad ahead of the upcoming season.

Greenwood’s imminent switch to Turkey marks another pivotal chapter in a career that once appeared destined for stardom at Old Trafford.

The forward was widely recognised as one of the most naturally gifted players to emerge from Manchester United’s academy in recent years, known for his exceptional finishing and ability to play across the attacking line.

However, his career trajectory took a dramatic turn following his arrest and suspension in early 2022.

Although the criminal charges against Greenwood were later dropped, the intense public scrutiny and internal investigations made a return to Manchester United increasingly implausible.

After reviving his career during a loan spell with Getafe and later securing a permanent move to Marseille, Greenwood now appears ready to begin a new chapter with Fenerbahce.

For Manchester United, the deal highlights shrewd long-term planning, allowing the club to profit financially from a player who no longer features in their future sporting plans.
