Manchester United and Chelsea have reportedly finalised an agreement worth up to £50 million for the transfer of Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos. The 22-year-old has been granted permission to travel to Manchester to complete his medical tests and finalise his move to Old Trafford.
United secure promising Brazilian talent
According to Sky Sports, Manchester United have made a major move in the transfer market by securing Santos for a total package of £50 million. The Red Devils will pay an initial £48 million upfront to their Premier League rivals, with an additional £2 million to be paid in performance-related add-ons. The deal signifies a considerable investment in the young midfielder, who is expected to complete his medical in the coming days. The signing underlines United's ambition as they gear up for their return to the UEFA Champions League next season after a strong campaign under manager Michael Carrick.
The agreement also benefits Chelsea, who have negotiated a 10% sell-on clause in Santos’s contract with Manchester United. Having experienced inconsistent involvement with the first team during his time in West London, the transfer offers Santos a fresh start and the promise of a more prominent role at a major European club under the spotlight of Old Trafford.
Xabi Alonso’s new era brings departures
Santos’s departure coincides with Xabi Alonso’s preparations to take over as Chelsea’s manager, with the Spaniard already initiating significant changes within the team. Reports indicate that the Brazilian international informed Chelsea of his wish to leave due to uncertainty about his first-team opportunities during Alonso’s debut season. With intense competition for midfield positions, Santos was reluctant to risk another campaign on the fringes of the squad.
Moises Caicedo’s decision to sign a new long-term deal with Chelsea also played a crucial role in shaping Santos’s decision. With Caicedo firmly established as a key figure in the midfield, Santos saw limited opportunity for regular starts. Feeling his prospects diminished, the 22-year-old chose to pursue a new challenge elsewhere.
A complex journey with Chelsea
Since joining Chelsea in January 2023, Santos’s journey has been anything but straightforward. Soon after signing, he was loaned back to Vasco da Gama until the end of the 2023–24 campaign. He later moved on loan to Nottingham Forest for the 2024–25 season, but that stint was cut short due to limited playing time at the City Ground, prompting Chelsea to recall him in January 2024.
Although Santos missed out on Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil World Cup squad this summer, he remains a highly regarded young prospect. His reputation grew significantly during a successful loan spell at Strasbourg under coach Liam Rosenior, where he demonstrated his ability to adapt to the demands of European football. Despite high expectations for him to break into Chelsea’s first team last season, Santos struggled to find consistency under three different managers.
Santos sale boosts Alonso’s transfer budget to £126 million
From Chelsea’s perspective, the sale represents a strong financial return on a player signed from Vasco da Gama in 2023 for roughly £18 million. The club’s management acted swiftly to sanction the move once it was clear that Santos was dissatisfied with his expected playing time in the coming season.
The transfer marks Chelsea’s third confirmed sale of the current summer window, following Marc Cucurella’s £52 million move to Real Madrid and Tyrique George’s £24 million transfer to Everton. With Santos’s move to Manchester United, Chelsea’s total transfer income for the summer has reached approximately £126 million. The funds are expected to be reinvested as Xabi Alonso continues reshaping his squad to fit his vision for the club.
