Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Fabian Ruiz has opted to extend his stay in the French capital, committing to a new long-term contract with the club. The Spanish international reportedly turned down strong interest from Real Madrid and Bayern Munich to continue his successful spell with PSG, during which he has lifted multiple domestic and European trophies.
The midfielder’s renewed deal secures his future at Paris Saint-Germain. Ruiz had been expected to enter the final year of his previous contract, which had drawn attention from several of Europe’s elite clubs. However, as reported by French outlet RMC Sport, PSG have managed to finalise an agreement with the 30-year-old, who joined the club from Napoli in 2022 for a transfer fee of €22.5 million.
According to journalist Fabrice Hawkins, Ruiz has already signed a one-year extension with an option to prolong his stay for an additional 12 months, ensuring stability in Luis Enrique’s midfield plans.
Before the official announcement, speculation was widespread across Spain and Germany. Reports suggested that Real Madrid viewed Ruiz as a potential replacement for Toni Kroos, who recently departed the Santiago Bernabéu, while Bayern Munich were preparing an offer worth under €40 million. Both clubs were keen to secure the services of a proven performer who has already amassed two UEFA Champions League titles and four domestic league crowns during his tenure at PSG.
Ruiz’s importance to Luis Enrique’s setup cannot be overstated. Last season, he featured in 34 matches across all competitions, including 20 Ligue 1 appearances and nine outings in the Champions League, where PSG emerged victorious. Over the course of a demanding campaign that also included the FIFA Intercontinental Cup and UEFA Super Cup, Ruiz contributed two goals and five assists while accumulating 2,122 minutes of play.
His wealth of experience – highlighted by triumphs in the European Championship and Nations League with Spain – makes him a crucial component in PSG’s pursuit of continued dominance both domestically and on the continental stage.
Currently, Ruiz’s attention is fully on international duty as he represents Spain at the World Cup. He has already made five appearances in the tournament and played a vital role in Spain’s 1-0 victory over Portugal in the round of 16. With a quarter-final clash against Belgium on the horizon, Ruiz will only return to Paris Saint-Germain after Spain conclude their campaign for global honours.
