FC Barcelona are reportedly ready to deliver a double setback to Manchester United after entering the race to sign Borussia Dortmund winger Karim Adeyemi, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The 24-year-old German international has long been on Manchester United’s radar, with the club’s interest intensifying recently as INEOS continue their search for a dynamic new winger. Adeyemi, who can operate effectively on either wing or through the centre, is renowned for his blistering pace and technical ability, making him a constant menace for defenders.
Recognised as one of the quickest players in Bundesliga history, Adeyemi once clocked a top speed of 36.65 km/h. Beyond his speed, he is also known for his direct dribbling style and his powerful right foot, which makes him a potent attacking threat.
Despite a dip in form last season, during which he managed 10 goals and five assists compared to 12 goals and 11 assists the previous campaign, Adeyemi remains a highly valued player. Reports indicated some tension between him and Dortmund’s coaching staff during what was a challenging season under Edin Terzić.
Borussia Dortmund, nicknamed Die Schwarzgelben, are believed to be open to selling the Munich-born forward for around €65 million (£55 million). Manchester United face competition from Premier League rivals Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool, while Paris Saint-Germain are also monitoring the situation closely.
However, Barcelona have now taken the initiative, with Romano confirming that the Spanish giants have submitted an official bid for Adeyemi, first reported by Gerard Romero.
Romano stated that Barcelona have formally approached Borussia Dortmund regarding Adeyemi and that negotiations are ongoing. It is also understood that Adeyemi has made Barcelona his preferred – and only – destination this summer, with the Catalan club now awaiting Dortmund’s response.
This development comes as a major blow to Manchester United and other interested clubs, as Adeyemi’s preference for a move to Camp Nou appears to leave little room for alternative outcomes. Talks between Barcelona and Dortmund continue, but the momentum suggests Adeyemi could soon be heading to Catalonia.
For Manchester United, the potential deal represents a second setback. It appears to rule out any chance of Barcelona reigniting their previous interest in Marcus Rashford.
The 28-year-old England forward, who is currently representing the Three Lions at the World Cup in North America, spent last season on loan at Barcelona. The loan deal included a £26 million option to buy, which initially seemed likely to be exercised after Rashford helped the team retain their LaLiga title.
In an unexpected turn, however, Barcelona decided not to make the move permanent. Instead, they sought to negotiate a lower transfer fee or secure another loan agreement. Manchester United rejected both proposals, preferring to bring Rashford back to Old Trafford and explore other potential buyers rather than lowering their valuation.
Unfortunately for United, the market for a forward approaching 30 and heavily reliant on pace, coupled with a salary exceeding £300,000 per week, has proven difficult. Several clubs have expressed an interest, but no concrete offers have materialised so far.
Barcelona’s apparent disinterest in pursuing Rashford further – particularly after signing Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United and targeting Adeyemi as well – poses a serious challenge for INEOS as the summer transfer window progresses.
