Google's New Backup Policy: Google has introduced a major update for millions of Android users that directly affects cloud storage usage. Under the new policy, whenever a user backs up their phone, the data will count towards the default 15GB of free storage provided with the Google account. In other words, a larger portion of your free 15GB storage will be consumed compared to before.

What has changed in Google's new policy?
New Change: Google implemented the new backup policy on July 7. Android device backups will now count directly against the Google account storage limit. This means that not only photos and videos, but also SMS messages, call history, device settings, app data, and other backup files will be included in the free 15GB allocation.

How was it before?

Previously, the free Google account storage covered items like photos, videos, and GIFs. Android backup data was managed separately and generally did not impact the 15GB limit; however, this system is now changing.

Users get more control.
The company states that it is also adding new options to Google backup settings alongside this change. Users will now be able to decide exactly what to include in the backup and what to exclude.
Additionally, users will find separate toggles for SMS/MMS messages, call history, device settings, and app data within the backup settings, making it easier to manage backups according to their needs.

Will this cause storage to fill up faster?
Users may understandably worry that their account storage will fill up more quickly.
Google states that there won't be a significant impact, as this change will consume only about 40MB of additional storage. According to the company, the effect on most users will be minimal.

Has this change already been implemented?
Yes, the change took effect for new Android backup users on July 7. For existing Google accounts, it will be rolled out in phases over the coming months.
