Players in the Norway camp have reportedly been “coughing and rasping” during the World Cup, but the team’s medical staff has now moved to calm any fears ahead of their quarter-final clash with England.
Norway’s team doctor, Ola Sand, has downplayed worries about illness within the squad prior to Saturday’s crucial World Cup quarter-final against England.
Reports from Norwegian media had suggested that several players were suffering from sickness after a demanding tournament schedule that has seen the team travel extensively across the United States.
Earlier in the week, head coach Stale Solbakken acknowledged that a few players had shown symptoms such as coughing, tiredness, and minor discomfort, prompting speculation that the squad might not be at full strength before their biggest match in World Cup history.
Solbakken stated to reporters: “We’ve had a few players who haven’t been feeling well, but things are improving. It’s not ideal during a tournament, but we’re managing the situation.”
However, Dr. Sand has since reassured fans that there is no reason for concern.
Speaking to Norwegian outlets, she confirmed that all players are currently fit and ready to play, adding that the situation is completely under control despite ongoing rumours.
She told Nettavisen: “All players are healthy now. It’s quite remarkable that we’ve stayed this well considering we’ve been together for nearly six weeks.
“It’s amusing that the English media believe otherwise. We’re in full control.”
The concerns originally arose following Solbakken’s comments after Norway’s surprising victory over Brazil in the round of 16. The manager had mentioned: “We’ve really only had Jorgen who had a fever. But there has been some coughing and rasping here and there. With air conditioning, flights, changing rooms, and all that, it’s not unexpected.
“We’re more than 50 people, so it would be odd if no one felt under the weather.”
Strand Larsen had missed training before the tournament opener, while Marcus Holmgren Pedersen was unavailable for the match against Brazil due to illness. Even Solbakken himself was seen coughing during a post-match press conference, which added to the speculation surrounding the team’s health.
