As the new football season approaches, the transfer window once again presents clubs with the opportunity to reshape their squads and redefine their ambitions. Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS group are now entering their third campaign at the helm of Manchester United.
Ratcliffe and his team have already committed over £300 million towards strengthening the squad through transfers.
Out of the 11 new players brought in, which ones have proven to be smart investments and which have fallen short of expectations? Here’s a ranking of Manchester United’s INEOS-era signings, from the least effective to the very best.
When Ugarte joined during INEOS’ first summer transfer window in 2024, he was seen as the long-awaited solution to United’s enduring midfield problems. Unfortunately, he hasn’t lived up to that billing.
The Uruguayan midfielder has had ample opportunities to make an impression, featuring in 65 matches across all competitions. However, with just two goals and seven assists in that spell, he hasn’t exactly been an attacking force.
While judging him solely on goals and assists may be unfair, Ugarte was expected to bring steel and composure to midfield — a relentless tackler capable of driving play forward. Sadly, even by those standards, he has largely disappointed.
His sluggish pace makes the Old Trafford turf appear sticky beneath him, and his delayed tackling often leaves fans frustrated. When he does attempt a forward pass, it occasionally feels as though he’s unfamiliar with his own teammates.
Two full seasons on, and there’s still uncertainty over Zirkzee’s best position.
Brought in to add versatility in attack, Zirkzee has been deployed as a target man, a number 10, and even as a wide forward — yet has struggled to convince in any of those roles.
One of his lowest moments came in the match against Newcastle, when he was substituted before half-time, jeered by the crowd, and left the pitch in tears — hardly the confidence-building start he needed.
Ratcliffe, watching from the stands, might have regretted not spending that money on a new yacht instead. To his credit, Zirkzee did manage to bounce back and regain some fan support, but it’s safe to say he won’t be the player to lead United back to the top.
The towering Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt has unfortunately spent much of his United career on the treatment table. Injuries have plagued him almost continuously.
It’s somewhat baffling how a player with the turning radius of a combine harvester manages to pick up so many injuries, but somehow he does. Bayern Munich’s willingness to sell should have served as a warning sign. They clearly didn’t view him as elite, though the transfer did give their medical team some extra free time.
Despite his struggles, Yoro still holds great promise and could yet prove to be INEOS’ best signing. The 20-year-old centre-back arrived as one of Europe’s brightest defensive prospects.
Last season, he appeared nervous and occasionally overwhelmed by the pressure of wearing the red shirt. His progress has been hampered by injuries and a lack of defensive consistency around him. Given the sizeable transfer fee, Ratcliffe will expect significant improvement from Yoro this season.
This next deal was a clever piece of business. Compared to Yoro’s hefty price tag, Heaven cost only £1 million — a relative bargain in modern football.
During an injury crisis last season, the young defender stepped up admirably. His standout performance came on Boxing Day, when he delivered a commanding display in United’s 1-0 win over Newcastle — earning him the Player of the Month award.
Signed from Italian side Lecce, Dorgu has shown flashes of real potential. His spectacular long-range strike against Arsenal quickly made him a fan favourite and tempted many to rank him higher on this list.
However, Dorgu can still frustrate. His decision-making and final product remain inconsistent, and there are moments when he seems to lose awareness while dribbling at defenders. Nevertheless, his energy and willingness to run make him a valuable squad member.
Having featured in over 70 matches for United, Mazraoui has proven to be a solid signing. He consistently delivers reliable 7/10 performances whenever called upon.
Mazraoui is not the modern attacking full-back type; instead, he’s more of a traditional defender who relishes the art of stopping opponents. As he’s demonstrating in this World Cup, defending is his passion, and he plays for both club and country with immense pride.
Benjamin Sesko’s start at Old Trafford was far from smooth. In his early months, he looked awkward and unsure, struggling to find his rhythm. Ratcliffe might have been tempted to check the return policy after it took seven matches for Sesko to score his first goal.
However, the striker turned things around after Ruben Amorim’s departure, netting nine goals in the second half of the season. He now looks like a player capable of developing into a top-tier forward in the near future.
Few signings have made as immediate an impact as Bryan Mbuemo. The former Brentford winger brought much-needed speed, intensity, and energy to United’s attack, reinvigorating the Stretford End faithful.
His goals and assists were vital in helping United secure Champions League qualification, but his contribution extended beyond statistics. Mbuemo’s relentless pressing and pace allowed United to dominate opposition defences by recovering possession high up the pitch. He has quickly become a fan favourite.
Matheus Cunha has added a spark of creativity and flair to United’s forward line. With his unpredictable style and natural ability, he entertains supporters every time he touches the ball.
Beyond his direct goal contributions, Cunha’s artistry and charisma have made him one of the club’s most exciting players to watch. A thrilling second season could be on the horizon.
Finally, we arrive at the standout success of the INEOS era — goalkeeper Lammens. No player has had a greater influence on United’s recent revival.
Admittedly, his arrival was made to look even better when compared to the inconsistent goalkeepers who came before him. Still, the young Belgian has been outstanding since his debut — composed, confident, and immensely talented at just 24 years old.
Lammens embodies what a Manchester United player should be: calm under pressure, technically gifted, and mentally strong. His presence has transformed the team’s defensive reliability. At such a modest fee, his signing stands out as Ratcliffe and INEOS’ finest piece of business to date.
