The shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) is gathering pace in India, and the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) has expressed its support for the Delhi government's proposed EV policy. While acknowledging that the transition from petrol and diesel vehicles to electric mobility will present several challenges, the industry body believes it is a necessary step toward the future of transportation.

According to FADA, the move will require significant adjustments from vehicle manufacturers, dealerships, and consumers, but the long-term benefits are expected to outweigh the initial hurdles.

FADA President C.S. Vigneshwar said the automotive industry must prepare for the growing adoption of electric vehicles. He emphasized that the transition involves much more than introducing new EV models.

Developing a widespread charging infrastructure, upgrading service facilities, and building a skilled workforce capable of handling electric vehicles will all be essential for the successful adoption of EVs.

The association believes that expanding the charging network should be a top priority. Easy access to charging stations will play a crucial role in encouraging more consumers to switch to electric vehicles.

FADA also highlighted the need to train dealership technicians in EV technology. Since electric vehicles require different servicing procedures and specialized equipment compared to conventional petrol and diesel vehicles, dealerships will need to invest in new tools and technical expertise.

The organization added that close cooperation between the government and automobile manufacturers can make the transition smoother for both businesses and customers.

The Delhi government is working to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles through its proposed EV policy.

Under the plan:

• New electric three-wheelers are expected to receive priority from April 2027.

• The sale of new petrol-powered two-wheelers is proposed to be phased out gradually from April 2028.

The proposed policy has sparked discussions across the automobile industry, particularly among manufacturers that currently have a limited range of electric vehicles.

India's electric vehicle market has been witnessing steady growth, with demand increasing across multiple segments.

Electric scooters and motorcycles, in particular, are gaining popularity as more consumers look for cleaner and more economical mobility options. Several leading automobile manufacturers are also expanding their EV portfolios by introducing new models.

To help dealerships adapt to the changing market, FADA has announced plans to support its members through various initiatives. These include technician training programs, assistance in developing EV-ready service facilities, promoting charging infrastructure, and creating awareness among consumers about electric vehicles.

FADA believes that while the transition to electric mobility will involve significant investment and preparation, it is a necessary evolution for India's automotive industry. With better infrastructure, skilled technicians, and coordinated efforts between the government and the industry, the shift to electric vehicles can become more efficient and sustainable in the years ahead.
