Barcelona, Liverpool, and Manchester United are reportedly among several top European clubs pursuing Colorado Rapids defender Lucas Herrington.
The 18-year-old Australian has emerged as one of the most in-demand young talents of the summer following his breakout performance at the World Cup. His impressive displays have sparked strong interest from across Europe, highlighting the scale of his growing reputation.
According to Graeme Bailey of TEAMtalk, Everton, Aston Villa, and Newcastle United have joined the Premier League race to sign Herrington. In addition, Chelsea’s owners and the parent company of Manchester City have also held initial discussions regarding a potential move. Meanwhile, European giants Bayern Munich, Ajax, and Monaco are among the clubs keeping close tabs on his situation.
Herrington’s performances at the World Cup marked a true coming-of-age moment. The young centre-back became Australia’s youngest-ever starter at the tournament and drew widespread praise for his composure in matches against Paraguay and Egypt. Scouts were particularly impressed by his maturity, tactical awareness, and calmness under pressure at such a young age.
However, the campaign was not without heartbreak. Herrington missed a crucial penalty during the shootout defeat to Egypt in the round of 32, his strike agonisingly clipping the crossbar. Despite that setback, he earned admiration from fans and pundits alike for his courage, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic among those who publicly commended his bravery.
Herrington’s rise has been rapid. Standing 6 feet 4 inches tall, he joined Colorado Rapids from Brisbane Roar in January for a fee of less than £1 million. Within months, his value has soared, positioning the MLS outfit for a sizeable profit should they decide to sell.
Colorado, however, are in a strong negotiating position. While open to a transfer for the right offer, the club are interested in structuring a deal that would see Herrington loaned back to the MLS side for another year before heading to Europe. Several interested clubs believe this arrangement could further aid his development and ease his transition.
For Liverpool, such a patient plan aligns with their long-term recruitment model. Fenway Sports Group (FSG) have focused on investing in high-potential young players, and allowing Herrington to continue developing in the United States before moving to England would suit their philosophy perfectly.
Herrington’s momentum shows no signs of slowing. He has recently been selected for the MLS All-Star team to face Liga MX, where he is set to line up alongside Lionel Messi later this month — a further testament to his rising stature in the game.
