Manchester United have announced a significant development in their plans for a new 100,000-capacity stadium, confirming the proposed location for the project.
On Thursday, the club revealed that the new state-of-the-art venue is set to be constructed approximately 350 metres north-west of the existing Old Trafford ground.
However, a final decision regarding the future of the current stadium has not yet been taken.
United also shared their broader vision for the Trafford Wharfside regeneration scheme, which aims to transform the area surrounding Old Trafford into a leading sports and entertainment hub. The project will include thousands of new homes, improved public transport links, and enhanced walking and cycling routes.
According to the club, the development is expected to create around 48,000 local jobs and contribute an estimated £7.3 billion annually to the UK economy.
The proposal is now awaiting approval from Trafford Council, with a decision scheduled for 20 July. If the plan is approved, an eight-week public consultation will follow from 28 July to 22 September, allowing residents to review the masterplan and share their feedback through local events.
Collette Roche, Chief Executive Officer of New Stadium Development at Manchester United, stated, “The release of the Wharfside Masterplan marks another major milestone in our mission to build a new world-class home for Manchester United at the centre of a vibrant and transformational district for Trafford and Greater Manchester.”
She continued, “Together with our partners, we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create a destination that delivers lasting benefits for fans, local communities, and the wider region for decades to come.”
“The proposed stadium site is perfectly positioned beside Old Trafford, allowing us to preserve the club’s heritage, traditions, and matchday rituals that are so meaningful to our supporters, while also providing the infrastructure and connectivity needed for a truly world-class fan experience.”
“Our commitment is to build a world-class stadium with our supporters, not merely for them. Atmosphere, affordability, and accessibility will remain central to our approach, and we look forward to continuing our dialogue with fans and stakeholders as we move into the next stage of design and development.”
Councillor Tom Ross, Leader of Trafford Council, added, “We are thrilled to launch the masterplan that begins the process of envisioning what could take shape here, to bring this world-class cultural and sporting destination to life. Our goal is to create a place people will love to visit, not just on matchdays but every day – and we encourage as many residents and businesses as possible to help shape this vision through our upcoming consultation.”
He further explained, “Wharfside will become a network of welcoming neighbourhoods where people can live, work, explore, relax with family, experience nature and wildlife, meet friends, dine, shop, and enjoy entertainment.”
“It will feature beautiful parks and waterfront spaces, a range of housing options including affordable homes, new healthcare and educational facilities, integrated public transport, and safe spaces for walking, cycling, and active living.”
