Earlier this week, England recorded one of their most memorable victories in World Cup history, defeating Mexico at the Azteca Stadium.
The latest update to the tournament’s disciplinary rules ensures that players can no longer miss the final due to accumulated yellow cards in the semi-final stage.
However, if a player picks up their second yellow card in two consecutive matches during the quarter-final, they will be suspended for the following game.
All previous bookings were reset after the group stage, which means that any yellow cards collected during the early rounds do not carry forward into the knockout phase.

To clarify, if a player who received a yellow card in the Round of 32 or Round of 16 is booked again in the quarter-final, they will miss the semi-final match as a result of the suspension.
Players can only be suspended for the final if they are shown a red card in the semi-final, not due to an accumulation of yellow cards.
As the competition progresses, teams such as France, Morocco, England, Norway, Argentina, Switzerland, Spain, and Belgium will all be mindful of this rule ahead of the semi-finals, where the slate will be wiped clean once again.
