Football icons Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé have both been in spectacular form at the ongoing FIFA World Cup. Yet, when it comes to penalties, things have not gone entirely according to plan.
Messi, who currently tops the scoring charts with eight goals, has already missed two spot-kicks during the tournament. Mbappé, who has netted seven times, now appears to have caught the same penalty curse.
In France’s quarter-final clash against Morocco, the Paris-born star had a golden opportunity to put his team ahead in the 28th minute after Noussair Mazraoui fouled him inside the box.
However, after being made to wait unusually long before taking the penalty, Mbappé seemed visibly tense. His strike lacked both power and precision, allowing Morocco’s goalkeeper and penalty expert Yassine Bounou to make a comfortable save.
Among the many subpar penalties witnessed at this World Cup, Mbappé’s miss might just stand out as the worst of them all.
