Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes has issued a heartfelt statement following Portugal’s painful exit from the World Cup just days ago.

Heading into the tournament held across North America, Portugal were widely tipped as one of the leading contenders for football’s ultimate honour, with many expecting them to make a deep run.

However, their campaign began on shaky ground with a 1-1 draw against DR Congo in their opening fixture. They responded emphatically in their second game, thrashing Uzbekistan 5-0 to regain momentum.

Portugal then played out a goalless stalemate with Colombia before securing a dramatic victory over Luka Modrić’s Croatia to confirm their place in the Round of 16. That set up a tantalising knockout clash with Spain, but the Selecao could not advance further.

Arsenal’s Mikel Merino netted a stoppage-time winner to send Spain into the quarter-finals, leaving Portugal heartbroken and out of the competition.

After the defeat, a visibly emotional Fernandes appeared to question the tactical decisions made by head coach Roberto Martinez, who was 52 years old at the time. Martinez has since stepped down from his position. Fernandes also reflected that he had believed Portugal had what it took to progress much further in the tournament, though that hope ultimately went unfulfilled.

The playmaker has now shared his thoughts publicly through a statement.

He wrote, “Sad, frustrated, and disillusioned.”

“This group of players made my expectations high, not only because of their quality but also because of the incredible team bond we have built over these years.”

“Thank you to all the players, coaching staff, and every member of the support team who worked with and supported us throughout the World Cup.”

“To all Portuguese fans, a huge thank you for your belief and support.”

Fernandes is expected to take a three-week holiday before rejoining Manchester United for pre-season preparations.
