Manchester United have faced a major disappointment in their efforts to sign Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi, as new developments have emerged confirming a deal elsewhere.
The Red Devils have made strengthening their midfield a top priority this summer, with several key players on their radar.
Michael Carrick’s side are on the verge of completing the signing of Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos, who successfully underwent his medical earlier today. Additionally, United have already reached terms with Atalanta and are expected to proceed with Ederson’s medical as the next step in finalising that transfer.
However, the club’s recruitment plans do not end there, as at least one more midfield addition is anticipated before the window closes.
Reports previously covered by The Peoples Person indicated that Manzambi was among the players admired by United’s scouting department. Over the past year, the Swiss international has established himself as one of the Bundesliga’s standout midfielders.
As a true box-to-box midfielder, Manzambi combines tremendous physical power with refined technical ability. His driving runs from deep positions cause persistent problems for opponents, while his composed finishing adds another layer to his offensive threat.
During the previous Bundesliga season, the 20-year-old contributed five goals and four assists across 27 appearances. He has also been one of the revelations of the ongoing World Cup, recording three goals and two assists for Switzerland, who are set to face Argentina in the quarter-finals this weekend.
Newcastle United were also linked with Manzambi alongside Manchester United as potential suitors for the player.
Now, journalist Florian Plettenberg has revealed that Newcastle have reached an agreement with Freiburg regarding the transfer.
According to the Sky Germany reporter, “EXCLUSIVE | Newcastle and SC Freiburg have reached a full agreement over the transfer of Johan Manzambi worth €60m.”
He added, “All agreed between the clubs. #NUFC are now finalising the final details of the agreement with Manzambi. Long-term contract prepared.”
“Aston Villa were also in the race following Amadou Onana’s ACL injury, but Newcastle are the clear favourites.”
“Manzambi, who is currently injured, remains fully focused on the World Cup.”
Manzambi has often been compared to Jude Bellingham, evoking memories for Manchester United fans of their missed opportunity to sign the England star several years ago.
