Do you still have a pink ₹2,000 note tucked away in a corner of your home or in a cupboard? There is no need to worry. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has released an update regarding the ₹2,000 notes. This pink ₹2,000 note remains fully valid as 'legal tender' (its legal status remains intact). The RBI shared this information via a post on its official X (formerly Twitter) account.
**What the RBI data says**
On May 19, 2023—the date the RBI announced the withdrawal of ₹2,000 notes from circulation—there were ₹2,000 notes worth a total of ₹3.56 lakh crore in the market. According to data from April 30, 2026, notes worth only ₹5,451 crore remain in the market. This means that 98.47% of the notes have returned to the banking system. However, the RBI has shared information regarding the approximately 1.5% of notes that remain with the public.
**Where can you exchange the notes?**
**Exchange at RBI offices:** You can exchange your ₹2,000 notes at any of the 19 RBI Issue Offices located across the country.
**Deposit into your bank account:** RBI Issue Offices also accept ₹2,000 notes for direct deposit into your bank account.
**Send via India Post:** You can mail your ₹2,000 notes from any post office in India to any RBI Issue Office via India Post to have the amount credited to your bank account.
