The long-awaited conclusion of the petrol-powered Porsche Macan chapter is just a few weeks away. On Thursday, the German automaker confirmed that it will assemble the final internal-combustion Macan by the end of July, marking the end of production for the compact SUV that has held the title of Porsche’s best-selling model for years.

This farewell comes at a challenging time for Porsche. The company has reported a decline in global sales for the first half of 2026, marking a rare setback across nearly all its model lines. The only exception is the legendary 911, which once again proved to be Porsche’s strongest performer even as the rest of the portfolio faced headwinds.

When the Macan was introduced for the 2015 model year, many Porsche enthusiasts questioned whether the brand needed another SUV. Those doubts quickly disappeared as the Macan became Porsche’s top-selling model globally, attracting thousands of new customers to the brand and generating significant profits. Although the all-electric Macan was launched in 2024, the petrol-powered version has continued to dominate sales volumes. With production now ending, Porsche is preparing to bid farewell to one of its most important revenue-generating models.

In the first half of 2026, Porsche delivered 122,306 vehicles worldwide, representing a 16 percent drop compared to the 146,391 units sold during the same period last year. Almost every model experienced declines: Cayenne deliveries were down by 9 percent, Taycan by 25 percent, Panamera by 38 percent, Macan by 22 percent, and the recently discontinued 718 saw a steep 73 percent fall. The only bright spot was the 911, which recorded a 19 percent increase in deliveries during the first six months of the year, underscoring the enduring demand for Porsche’s flagship sports car despite rising prices and global economic uncertainty.

The Macan’s discontinuation makes these sales figures even more notable. Porsche delivered 35,315 Macans in the first half of 2026, out of which 19,695 were petrol-powered. These combustion-engine models alone made up approximately 16 percent of Porsche’s total global deliveries. Replacing such a significant share of sales will pose a major challenge for the brand.

Rumours indicate that Porsche is already developing a new petrol-powered compact SUV, though it is not expected to reach production before 2028. In the meantime, the company will rely on the electric Macan to strengthen its position in the EV market, while the ever-popular 911 continues to shoulder a substantial portion of Porsche’s revenue generation.
