Uttar Pradesh has emerged as one of India's fastest-growing electric vehicle (EV) markets, with the state's share in the country's total EV sales reaching 18%. Backed by the Uttar Pradesh Electric Vehicle Manufacturing and Mobility Policy-2022, the Yogi Adityanath government now aims to increase this share to 30% over the next two years.

The state's EV policy has led to a sharp rise in subsidy applications, vehicle registrations, and charging infrastructure, strengthening Uttar Pradesh's position as a leading EV hub. EV Subsidy Applications Surge by 241%

According to the Uttar Pradesh Transport Department, 47,514 EV subsidy applications were approved during the financial year 2025-26, registering a 241% increase compared to the previous financial year.

In less than three months—from April 1 to June 22, 2026—another 9,934 subsidy applications have already been approved, reflecting growing public confidence in electric mobility.

Overall, the state has approved 86,489 EV subsidy applications, with subsidy payments already released for more than 43,000 beneficiaries.

Electric Two-Wheelers Lead the Growth

Electric two-wheelers continue to dominate the state's EV adoption.

The Transport Department said subsidy approvals include:

  • 61,417 electric two-wheelers
  • 24,959 electric four-wheelers
  • 104 electric goods carriers
  • 9 electric buses

The rising demand highlights the growing preference for affordable and environmentally friendly transportation across Uttar Pradesh.

UP Accounts for 18% of India's EV Sales

The success of the state's EV policy is also reflected at the national level.

According to a NITI Aayog 2024 report, Uttar Pradesh accounts for nearly 18% of all electric vehicles sold in India.

With a Rs.440 crore subsidy programme and continued policy support, the state government expects this share to increase to 25-30% within the next two years.

More Than 2,300 Charging Stations Installed

To support the rapid adoption of electric vehicles, the Yogi government has significantly expanded charging infrastructure across the state.

Over the past five years, Uttar Pradesh has installed 2,316 EV charging stations, including:

  • 540 fast chargers
  • 1,776 slow chargers

The state now has more than 1.5 million registered electric vehicles, making charging infrastructure expansion a key priority.

38,000 Charging Stations Planned

Experts estimate that Uttar Pradesh will require nearly 38,000 charging stations to meet future demand.

To achieve this, the government is developing new charging facilities under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model through Uttar Pradesh Renewable and EV Infrastructure Limited (UPREV).

New charging stations are being planned along expressways, major cities, railway stations, bus terminals, and tourist destinations.

High-speed charging facilities have already been installed on the Yamuna Expressway, Delhi-Meerut Expressway, and Lucknow-Agra Expressway.

Fully Digital EV Subsidy Process

The state government has also digitised the EV subsidy application process under the Uttar Pradesh Electric Vehicle Manufacturing and Mobility Policy-2022, which came into effect on October 14, 2022.

Applicants can apply online through the UPEV Subsidy Portal, where the entire process—from registration and document verification to approval and payment—is conducted digitally. How to Apply for the EV Subsidy
