A spot in the World Cup semi-finals is on the line at Los Angeles Stadium as Spain face Belgium in a high-stakes quarter-final showdown. Both European heavyweights are eager to book their place in the last four, where they will meet either France or Morocco.
Spain have yet to concede a single goal in this World Cup, maintaining one of the best defensive records in the tournament. Belgium, therefore, will need their attacking players to be at their most creative and clinical if they are to be the first side to breach the Spanish defence.
Belgium’s path to the quarter-finals included a dramatic 3-2 victory over Senegal, where they came from two goals down, followed by a convincing 4-1 win against co-hosts USA in the Round of 16. Spain, meanwhile, have displayed composure and tactical discipline throughout the competition.
English referee Michael Oliver has been confirmed as the match official for this highly anticipated encounter. Oliver is one of only two referees from England selected for this World Cup, alongside Anthony Taylor.
The Premier League official missed his first scheduled appearance at this tournament due to an injury, which had ruled him out of the Group E fixture between Ivory Coast and Ecuador. However, he recovered in time to officiate subsequent group-stage matches involving France and Norway, as well as the Netherlands’ game against Sweden. Most recently, he took charge of the Round of 16 clash between Canada and Morocco.
Oliver is officiating his second World Cup, having previously taken part in the 2022 edition in Qatar, where he oversaw two group matches and Brazil’s quarter-final defeat to Croatia following a penalty shootout.
At 41 years old, Oliver brings extensive experience to the pitch, having refereed 812 competitive fixtures across various levels, including the UEFA Champions League and two FA Cup finals. He remains one of the most respected officials in world football.
Notably, Oliver became the youngest referee ever appointed to a Premier League match when he made his debut in August 2010 at the age of 25 years and 182 days, a record he still holds to this day.
For this match, Oliver will be supported by fellow Englishmen Stuart Burt and James Mainwaring as assistant referees. Brazilian officials Ramon Abatti and Rafael Alves will serve as the fourth official and reserve assistant referee respectively.
The victorious team from this quarter-final will move on to the semi-finals, scheduled to take place at Los Angeles Stadium on 14 July.
