India’s Sarvesh Kushare made an impressive Diamond League debut by finishing third in the men’s high jump at the Monaco Diamond League 2026 on Friday.

The 31-year-old cleared 2.26m to secure a podium finish at the Stade Louis II, becoming only the fourth Indian athlete to finish in the top three at a Diamond League meet after Vikas Gowda, Neeraj Chopra and Murali Sreeshankar.

Kushare enjoyed a consistent outing, clearing 2.12m, 2.16m, 2.20m, 2.23m and 2.26m on his first attempt. He was unable to clear 2.28m in three attempts, ending the competition in third place.

Kushare continues breakthrough season

Ukraine’s Oleh Doroshchuk claimed victory with a best jump of 2.32m, while Great Britain’s Jack Kimani finished second after clearing 2.30m in his Diamond League debut.

Kushare’s performance saw him finish ahead of several accomplished jumpers, including joint Tokyo Olympics gold medallists Gianmarco Tamberi of Italy and Mutaz Barshim of Qatar, who ended seventh and eighth respectively.

The podium finish continues an outstanding season for Kushare. Last month, he broke Tejaswin Shankar’s eight-year-old national record by clearing 2.31m at the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar. He had also become the first Indian high jumper to qualify for the final at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo last year.

Kushare has been named in India’s 32-member athletics squad for the 2026 Commonwealth Games and will head into the multi-sport event with growing confidence following his latest international success.
