Harry Kane has brushed aside comparisons with Erling Haaland ahead of England’s World Cup quarter-final against Norway, stating firmly that the two are very different types of strikers. The Bayern Munich forward lauded the Manchester City star’s extraordinary scoring record and physical strength but emphasised that his main priority is to help the Three Lions lift the World Cup trophy.
Kane plays down Haaland comparison ahead of knockout clash
In the build-up to England’s World Cup quarter-final with Norway, much of the discussion has centred on which striker is the more complete finisher. Kane, however, maintained that while both players lead the line for their national teams, their styles are not directly comparable. The England captain explained that his playing approach involves more participation outside the penalty area, whereas Haaland’s game thrives on his power and precision inside the box.
England skipper outlines why their styles are distinct
Speaking to Nettavisen before the last-eight showdown, Kane elaborated on why he doesn’t see the comparisons as particularly relevant. Though both are prolific scorers, he stressed that their tactical roles and on-field responsibilities are markedly different.
“It’s an impossible question for me to answer. First of all, I think we are completely different players. I know we are both recognised as strikers, but honestly, it’s almost like we play two separate positions,” Kane explained.
“Erling has been fantastic, and his goal numbers are incredible. Physically, he’s a machine — a beast — and his finishing ability is at the highest level. His goal record speaks for itself.”
“Even though I also score goals, I prefer being more connected with the ball, contributing in build-up play and combinations. But I can also operate purely as a number nine. I don’t think it’s really something worth comparing.”
Team glory over personal accolades
The fight for the Golden Boot is heating up, with Haaland currently leading on seven goals and Kane just one behind. Nevertheless, the Bayern Munich forward insists that winning the 2026 World Cup remains his sole objective, regardless of who finishes as the top scorer.
“It’s been an incredible World Cup because so many strikers are finding the net,” Kane said. “That’s not always the case in major tournaments. The competition is fierce, which drives me to perform at my best. My ultimate goal is to win the World Cup with England, not the Golden Boot. But of course, my job is to score goals that help the team succeed.”
Quarter-final showdown in focus
England and Norway are set for a thrilling quarter-final encounter, with Kane and Haaland leading their respective attacking lines. The duel between these two prolific forwards will be one of the match’s biggest storylines, but both will be focused on guiding their teams into the semi-finals.
