The Indian Cricket Team created an unwanted record with a loss in the final T20I against England, as it is now the first time that India has lost four T20s in a bilateral series.
The India vs England T20I series was a five-game affair and was played in the United Kingdom. It was the start of a new era for Indian cricket, as it was only the second series and the first against a top nation under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer.
The first match of this series in Chester-le-Street was abandoned after the first innings due to rain. And then the humiliation began from the second game.
The second match of the series, played at the Old Trafford Cricket Ground in Manchester, was the international debut of young Indian prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. It was a decent batting performance for India, as they scored 190 runs while batting first.
In response, the Three Lions won the match thanks to Jacob Bethell’s Player of the Match performance, which included an impressive 76* runs.
The third match was played at Trent Bridge, and if the Men in Blue were to win the series, they needed a win here. England batted first this time and made 201 runs in 20 overs. However, in response, the Indian Cricket Team buckled and was all out for 76, losing the match by 125 runs.
The fourth match was yet another humiliating loss for the defending T20I world champions. India batted first and managed to make just 158 runs on the back of a solid 80-run knock by skipper Iyer. The English chased the total down in 13.5 overs with nine wickets to spare.
Having lost the series, India took Sooryavanshi out of the playing XI and brought back Sanju Samson in an attempt to avoid a whitewash. England won the toss in Southampton and decided to bat first.
Openers Phil Salt were dismissed early, but then came a 233-run partnership between wicketkeeper Jos Buttler and captain Harry Brook. While Brook was not out at the end for 95 off 45, Buttler scored 131 runs in just 64 balls, taking the total to 257 runs in 20 overs.
In response, the Indian openers were dismissed early, and half-centuries by Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma took India to a respectable total of 201/8, as they lost the match by 56 runs.
With a defeat in the fifth and final T20I of the series, India broke an unwanted record. With a washout of the first game, India avoided a 5-0 defeat but still lost the series 4-0.
This is the first time that the Indian Cricket Team has lost four matches in a T20I series. In fact, this is the first time India has failed to win a single match in a T20I series with three or more games.
The Shreyas Iyer era of T20 cricket in India has started on the wrong foot. Right before the India vs England series, the Men in Blue first lost an international game to Ireland, then lost again, becoming the first to lose a series to Ireland in any format.
