AIIMS Medical Board has submitted its final forensic report to CBI in Twisha Sharma death case. In this, the forensic dispute related to the ligature material used for hanging has been resolved. The report has been given in a sealed envelope on the instructions of the court.

New Delhi [भारत]July 12 (ANI): The AIIMS Medical Board, which conducted the second post-mortem on court orders in the Twisha Sharma death case, has submitted its final forensic opinion to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in a sealed envelope. The report resolves a major forensic controversy over the ligature material allegedly used for the hanging, which included a gymnastics belt with a metal ring.

The main forensic controversy was whether the gymnastics belt with a metal ring, which was allegedly used for the hanging, was an actual ligature and whether it matched the injuries on Twisha Sharma's neck. The first post-mortem could not establish this as the alleged ligature material was not produced before the medical board during the autopsy, due to which the Madhya Pradesh High Court ordered a second post-mortem to be conducted by the medical board of AIIMS Delhi.

Sources said laboratory and histopathological examination confirmed the presence of skin tissue on the ligature material, establishing that it matched the injury pattern. However, the final opinion of the board remains confidential as it has been handed over to the CBI in a sealed cover in compliance with the court's directions.

Second post-mortem conducted on the orders of the High Court

The Madhya Pradesh High Court in Jabalpur, in its May 22 order, writ petition number 19119/2026, had directed the formation of a medical board to conduct the second post-mortem in the death of Twisha Sharma. Acting on the court's directions, the director of AIIMS New Delhi constituted a five-member medical board comprising doctors from the forensic medicine department.

The board conducted a second post-mortem on May 24 and also visited the spot. The High Court had directed that the report be submitted to the investigating agency in a sealed envelope. In compliance with the order, the medical board on July 10 handed over its 11-page medical opinion in a sealed cover to the CBI for investigation, and the same was informed to the Registrar General of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.

The matter was investigated from every angle

Dr Sudhir Gupta, head of forensic medicine at AIIMS, declined to disclose the findings in view of High Court directions and subsequent Supreme Court orders, saying the board examined every aspect of the case before reaching its conclusion. Dr Gupta said, "The medical board deliberated very closely on the case from all possible angles for about a month, took into account all the available national and international journals and has given a detailed opinion with scientific justification. This is a very clear opinion in the interest of truth and justice for the CBI and the judiciary."

He declined to elaborate further and said the report has been handed over to the CBI in a sealed cover in compliance with the court's directions. According to the forwarding letter, the AIIMS Board handed over the sealed report to the CBI investigating officer, while the videography of the second post-mortem is with the investigating agency.

What is the whole matter?

Twisha Sharma, daughter-in-law of retired Principal District and Sessions Judge Giribala Singh, was found hanging at her in-laws' house in Bhopal earlier this year. Alleging lapses in the initial investigation and post-mortem, his family approached the Madhya Pradesh High Court, which ordered a second post-mortem by AIIMS Delhi and later handed over the investigation to the CBI. The opinion of AIIMS is expected to provide an important forensic evidence in the ongoing investigation of CBI. (ANI)
